New Rifle

I recently acquired a Thompson Center Icon Bolt Action rifle. It is a 300 Win. Mag. I know very little about Thompson Bolt actions and wondered if someone may share their experience or opinions. Also although I have reloaded alot, I have no experience with Magnums in general or the 300 Win. Mag. specifically. Would someone be willing to share reloading info. I'm thinking of an Elk load with Barnes bullets.

I owned an Icon in a 7mm mag. I really liked it a lot. It was one sweet shooting gun.
I will some day get another one.

Not much response about the Icon. I haven't put a scope on it yet, so still haven't shot it. I want to get a Leupold 4.5 t0 14, but may put an old 3x9 until I can afford it.

I picked up an Icon Weathershield .30 t/c at a price to good to pass up, the Icon is by far my favorite gun out of my Weatherby MOA and Winchester .270 wsm, and is the best shooter as well. I don't reload because I can't get the ballistics I get with the Hornady loads. They shoot great so no need. Looking at picking up a T/C Venture next, hope it shoots as good as my Icon and it is a little lighter. T/C bolt action rifles are the best factory rifles out there. Sorry I am no help with the reloads, I am sure many MM's know a few good loads for you.

I have a Ruger 300 Win. I love the caliber. I tried a few different loads before I settled on the one I use: IMR 4350 71 grains, Barnes TSX 165 grain or 168 tipped. CCI large Rifle magnum primers. Sub moa. Groups at 100. I had a trigger job done. That also helped a lot. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-11 AT 08:24PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the replies. I haven't got a scope put on it yet, but should have one shortly. Money's a little tight, I may have to put one of my old 3-9 Leupold scopes on it until I get the Leupold 4.5 to 14 I want. We're thinking along the same lines on the reloading dogdoc. I have used 4350 in my -06's with good result. I'll probably reload some 165 accubonds I have first, but want to try the Barnes bullets. I need to get with it, falls coming fast. The trigger on the Icon is really sweet, better than my Remingtons, Rugers, and Brownings.

My brother bought one 300 win mag. Put a 6.5-20 Vortex scope on it. The gun would not grab the casings Factory and reloads. It was also burring the cases. He sent it back and they gave him a new gun. I am not sure we will see I hope his new one is better. I am not sure what you paid for yours but I think he paid around 700 for his. I really do not like the plastic clips and the fact that you cannot load from the top. He was getting great groups but it was a single shot. Will see when he gets his new scope.

I finally put a scope on, and sighted it in. I put a Leupold Vari X III 4.5 to 14 My first loads were Hodgen 4831 behind Hornady 165 boattails. After bore sighting, the first night out, I shot five 3 shot groups. They all measured between 1/2 inch and an inch. Next I loaded some 180 grain Accubonds with IMR 4350. They're groups are slightly larger, but consistantly around an inch. Good enough for my LE Elk hunt in 2 weeks. So far I'm liking the gun alot. Love the triger, not fond of the plastic clip. No problems cycling rounds. Hope your brother has better luck with the second gun. My gun is the 2011 Mule Deer Foundation's Banquet gun. Paid $20.00 BacDoc

I think that is the scope I am going to put on my Sendero. 4.5-14X50. How do you like your scope? My brother just got his new gun.
