I made the 2 1/2 hour drive to Cabelas to return a 4 season Cabelas Alaskan tent I bought from them. The very first time I ever used it I unfortnately found it was not only missing a few pieces but it was used at least one time before. Someone very carefully repackaged it and took the effort to make it look factory sealed. I got half way there before realizing I left the receipt at home, when I got there I explained the situation to the girl at customer service showed her I had the orignal box and the tent the way I recieved it and she returned it with out a problem. She simply asked if I wanted a refund or another tent. I got another tent and ended up spending quite a bit of money on other stuff while there.

I have noticed that Cabelas has had to tighten up their return policies a little bit in the last few years due to people who abuse it but they are still a top notch outdoor retail store.

Sure I can get some stuff a bit cheaper online but knowing that Cabelas is willing to take care of the customer makes me a loyal customer for life.

We have a Bass Pro, Sportsmans and a Gander Mountain in Denver and I will always shop Cabelas first when I can.

Gander Mountain and Bass Pro are the pits when it comes to customer service and standing behind anything. Sportsmans is decent but Cabelas Rocks.

I agree Great White. I'm in Denver also and wish they'd get the Cabelas opened soon! Not sure when that will happen!

Sportsmans is much closer to me here in Weber County but I will still make the drive to Cabelas if I have the chance and it is all because of thier service. Sportsmans is a bear to price match thier competitors and they would not honor a Primos turkey decoy for thier own online advertised price of $19.99 saying it was thier online only price ONLY and I would have to pay the $26 standard price for the only one they had left that was the display! WTF?? At Cabelas I have almost had to give no reason when returning / exchanging failed or unsatisfactory items. And they honor thier online price too. I picked up a pair of $140 rain pants in Open Country camo for $19. I told them the price online, they thought I was crazy untill they looked it up and without any further hesitation on thier part, I walked out of the store that day saving $120 on a pair of $140 rain pants.

I'm sorry....did you say $140 rain pants? When you buy them do they put 3 crisp $20 bills in each front pocket as part of the sale? :) Never heard of $140 rain pants.

Cabela's customer service is great for a consumer but terrible for a supplier. It costs Cabela's nothing to take your item back and replace it. They just bill or short pay the supplier. The supplier has zero recourse even if it is obviously abuse. I buy a ton from Cabela's but at the same time I feel for the suppliers that get taken advantage of in some regards.

RE: Cabela's Customer Service

Cabela's customer service is the bomb!!G.W.H you are right when you said gander mountain and bass pro are the pits..Christmas 2010 received a 50 pack of power belts 245 grain, from the wife..Took them in thinking it wood be no big deal to exchange them for 295 grain.. No exchanges on ammo.. YOU SUCK GANDER MTN!!!They never returned my phone call when i was looking at buying a rossie pistol..YOU SUCK GANDER MTN..
It is to bad that sportsmans closed their littleton and Aurora location...

That's probably true, but if you are say Danner and Cabelas places an order for 85,000 pair of pronghorn boots....are you gonna say no even if you know 500 or so will come back. It's all about volume baby.

RE: Cabela's Customer Service

I have a little rant about Cabelas . I used to be all about Cabelas customer service and would even drive right by Sportsman's whorehouse to give Cabelas my money .

On a elk hunt I had my big sleeping bag rip on me . In my mind I kinda just figured oh well things happen . The bag is the Cabelas brand Magnum 44 . It wasn't all that old , but it was a gift from a family member so there was no receipt . The Cabelas name is printed all over the bag .

I was just going to keep using the bag until it was unusable and then break down and buy a new bag . Then a buddy pointed out items with the Cabelas name on them have a life time warranty . When he said that it jogged my memory that I was talked in to buying some cabelas hiking boots that the sales kid kept bragging up that they had a lifetime warranty . The boots where 300 bucks , about twice what I would normally pay for hikers . I figured with a life time warranty they would be worth trying for the price . I was asking the sales dude if lifetime meant a couple of years or the life of the boots , but he assurred me it meant lifetime . I was leary , but I did it .

Any way back to the sleeping bag . I looked online and read that only clothing and footwear with the cabelas brand had the warranty . I figured it was worth calling customer service at my local store . The customer service gal listens and then tells me , oh ya bring the bag in and we will exchange it .

I take the bag in at which point the tell me the bag is discontinued and the warranty is only for one year . I hear that about the fact they consider lifetime as being one year while I'm thinkin about those boots I just bought . He clarifies that the twice as expensive boots only have the one year warranty .

They didn't want to exchange the sleeping bag and was playing some games about the bag not being available . They give me a gift card for 99 bucks and tell me thats what the bag sold for . Remember it was a gift , and no way i'm calling Grandma and asking how much was that bag ?

I go to the camping section to see what kind of sleeping bag 99 bucks will buy . I look and lo and behold there is that Magnum 44 with a price tag of 219 bucks . I'm ready to explode , but the camping manager ended up making a staight across swap .

I'm still debating if I'm going to keep the boots after the games they have played . Don't get me wrong , I still really like Cabelas and would rather give them my money that Sportsman's . I'm just trying to save some body else a big headache and remember the whole buyer beware motto when they start trying to upsale " lifetime " .

RE: Cabela's Customer Service

I used to get all my gear from cabelas. Never had any problems with customer service, just the fact there gear they make is generally shity. Sometimes you can buy stuff made buy them and it will last for years but for me most of the time it falls apart in less than a year. The only things I buy from them is stuff thats not made buy them they just carry the brand.

Great post! a lot of truth in the comments. They have worked good for me on returns and defects. glad to see they worked with you
