kuiu - worth the hype?

I was able to look at the Kuiu gear at their office as it was close to my home. I bought the Guide jacket, Attack Pants and Rain gear top and bottom. The Attack pants are very good, quiet, move well, and dry very fast. I didn't get much of a chance to try out the Guide jacket as it rained every day I was in the Yukon. That being said, the Rain gear is the best I have ever used, and I've tried just about everything in the last 40 years.
I thought the rain gear would be too noisey, but found that when broken in and especially when wet that it is pretty quiet.
It moves very well, vents extremely well, and is very strong. I spent many days bushwacking both on foot and horseback and the rain gear held up against lots of brush and sharp tree staubs. It is the best rain gear I have ever used.
I am very skeptical about new equipment and all the hype that goes with it, but I found the Kuiu stuff to be very good. The primaloft jacket is also very good. I tried on the neck gaitor, beanie, and gloves but found them to be too small for normal sized grown men. Hope this helps.

Great stuff.
We have used and reviewed much of it.
I really like the merino wool shirts.

I echo what MTShasta said. There gear is very comfortable and and also VERY durable. I used there attack pants on a archery hunt this year in some very thorny and nasty under brush that would tear up most clothes, but the KUIU gear held up with no damage at all.

I also have there rain gear but have not been able to try it out just yet...hopefully next month! There merino under garments are much better than the under armor that I used to wear because they don't have the odor that the UA does after a days use.

hope this helps.

I have the guide jacket, attack pants, and merino wool shirt. I absolutely love them! Keeps you dry in moderate rain, dries fast, and extremely comfortable. I feel like I'm hunting in pajamas! My only complaint is that they are out of stock on their attack pants...I want a couple more pairs! I'm sold on Kuiu.

Is the rain gear windproof?

I am testing the Cabelas MTO50 Pro, Sitka Gear Stromfront (not Storm Front as a recent magazine spelled it), WT Tactical Hardshell, and Kuiu Chugach right now. Hope to have my first impressions up by the end of the week.

I have found that head to head in like conditions is the best way to evaluate this gear.

I can tell you that while the Kuiu is among the lightest of the group I am concerned about its relative durability.

Wade, looking forward to what you come with.

I can tell you that durability is NOT an issue with:
-Guide Jacket
-KUIU pants
-KUIU Gloves.

We used them extensively on an Idaho Sheep hunt, a Utah Elk hunt, and a Utah Deer Hunt.

They were not treated well, sliding in shale, using as a pad on 4 wheeler rides, pillows in a rock pile, etc.

They all held up, with no real signs of wear.

Very favorable compared to the competition for sure.

The rain jacket, I just do not know.

Good luck

i own nearly everything they make and used it on numerous sheep, elk and muley hunts last year. everything worked as described and especially the rain gear. wore it for almost 2 weeks in BC and the Yukon in rain/thunderstorms and never worried about getting wet! worked magnificently!

it's funny when you go to the website and read his little 2 page rambling, he talks about everything being affordable....everything still seems pretty damn expensive to me. hell, to get one of their 6000 cu. in. packs and the pack frame, you're going to be spending $550!!! are you $hitting me!!!

I don't have a KUIU pack, but I have pants, hat, and two jackets. They are as cheap or cheaper than any comparable items.

It is well worth it. IMO.

Kuiu is a quality product. I have the complete clothing set and the pack. Yes, it is more expensive than the junk you get at Wal-Mart, and it should be. It is far cheaper than Sitka and other top end gear, but it performs even better than the others. Good product - but don't tell anyone, they always seem to be out of stock!

Kuiu worth the hype?

I am with the rest of those who have posted. Each item I have bought over the last year has served me well and I continue to be impressed with the results.

It is a little more expensive but it is an investment in your hunting lifestyle. When you sit down and add up what you take on a hunting trip, your clothing is a small piece of the puzzle.

Kuiu is technical hunting gear. It is a system to keep you warmer and drier while maintaining mobility and keeping quiet. As far as hunting in the west... you wont find any better

I have quite a bit of the gear, and have bought some for my brother. The only problem I have is everytime I actually need some and goto order it, they are out and tell me it will be in sometime...That part is getting way frustrating. But the gear is top notch as long as you aren't in a hurry.
