Deep creeks

I'm considering putting in for the deep creeks in Utah next year. I have enough points to draw archery, muzzy, and late rifle. Give me your input on what hunt would be the most fun? The deep creeks have always sparked my interest. I plan on exploring the unit this spring and summer. Also I live in Saint George Utah what's the best way to get there from Saint George? Thanks for any input.

I have spent more than a fair amount of time hunting and exploring on the Deep Creeks from deer and Lion hunting. I had a muzzy elk tag around six years ago and this past fall I helped a buddy on his muzzy elk tag.

Things have changed considerably in six years and we didn't see the number of elk that I saw on my hunt. My buddy still had a good hunt and missed a bull that was in the 320-330 range. He ended up with a six point bull that made him happy, so very good hunt for him. We were camped by a young man that did end up with a 360 bull. That dead bull was the only thing we saw in that bracket.

Archery would be tough out there, but if you go that route I can tell you about some water holes that would be worth watching. From what I'm hearing the rifle guys have a hard time with those bulls rutting a little later than other units. Six years ago when I had my tag they were rutting on the muzzle hunt and this past year we saw some rutting but it was just harder to judge with out seeing the numbers I was used to.

Its a cool area and worth taking the time for you to explore.

Thanks foundation, heck I would be happy with a nice 300" bull. I have always wanted to explore the deep creeks. Maybe I'll check it out this year and decide for next year if it somewhere I want to hunt.

Hello Foundation,

I drew a Deep Creek archery elk tag for this fall and ran across your post from a couple of years ago.

I live far away in Iowa. I applied to this unit because from afar I've always had a fascination with the desert mountains in Utah and Nevada. And I thought I might have a chance at drawing this tag with 6 bonus points. I'm really excited to have the chance to hunt the Deep Creeks.

I'm not a complete rookie regarding elk hunting having killed six archery bulls over the past couple of decades in OTC units in Colorado and Montana, but on the other hand it's been a while since I've hunted elk and I've never set foot in the Deep Creeks. I therefore wonder if you'd be kind enough to share any insight on the unit.

From your post I gather you think the elk won't really be rutting during the archery hunt. I'm all ears if you know some waterholes worth checking out. I'm planning a scouting trip in about a month, so I can take a look then and try to get a feel for the place.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Also, do you know of any local horse packers who might be willing to pack out an elk?

Thanks,
Jeff

The deep creeks are definitely a magical place imo beautiful but differant country. The experience alone is awesome still some good bulls to be had out there my neighbor killed a nice bull that scored 345 2 years ago

The deep creeks are going to be a little rougher and tougher on your vehicles and your body than some of your prior elk hunts. Tough unforgiving country for sure. Coming from Iowa. Get local advise or a guide, its not really one of those units that s easy to show up and have elk running around screaming. There are also quite a few access issues with private land and indian reservation, so be aware of that too.

I have hunted this unit several times either as my tag or helping others. Access is tough. limited number of roads or trails up few canyons. Like anywhere else you need to get away from those access points to be successful. my buddy got a 330 class bull a few years ago and later I helped with info here to a guy from OR he went home with a 370 class bull. shoot me a pm for more detailed info
