Deep Creek / West Desert Elk

Hey all,

Just wanted to know if any other Monster Muley Members hunted here last year and how it went? I drew the early rifle tag and after much effort tagged a great bull! Awesome unit if you're willing to be patient and work your tail off, at least that's how it played out for me.

I drew a Deep Creek archery elk tag for this fall and ran across your post from a couple of years ago. Congratulations on your luck there last year.

I live far away in Iowa. I applied to this unit because from afar I've always had a fascination with the desert mountains in Utah and Nevada. And I thought I might have a chance at drawing this tag with 6 bonus points. I'm really excited to have the chance to hunt the Deep Creeks.

I'm not a complete rookie regarding elk hunting having killed six archery bulls over the past couple of decades in OTC units in Colorado and Montana, but on the other hand it's been a while since I've hunted elk and I've never set foot in the Deep Creeks. I therefore wonder if you'd be kind enough to share any insight on the unit.

I'm planning a scouting trip in about a month, so I can take a look then and try to get a feel for the place.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Also, do you know of any local horse packers who might be willing to pack out an elk?

Neat area the glory days out there were pretty awesome. One year on 6 bulls killed the average score was in the high 360s. These days I would venture to say it's closer to 300. Public side has been mismanaged. Still a neat mountain for sure capable of producing a nice elk.
