New to UT Draw

Just applied in UT for the first time, mostly to start the long process of building points. Just wanted to say that it's refreshing to apply for a draw that doesn't require thousands of $$$ to be paid in advance for the chance to draw. I'm not expecting to draw anything but look forward to hopefully hunting UT in the distant future! Good luck to everyone.

Hey Mr Ltsheets,

50%+ of the tags go into the random draw so there's always a chance!

Of course some of the odds are astronomically high but someone has to draw and the $$$ spent to play isn't too excessive.

Good luck!

Exactly my thoughts Zeke. I don't mind paying if drawn! Not getting my hopes up though haha. I used a lot of luck up last season here in NM.

I don't know about residents, but if you are a NR starting from ground zero, there are a hell of a lot better places to invest your money that have much better ROI. Just crunch the numbers. They don't lie. I'd only start from zero if you're already applying everywhere else and you have a lot of disposable income.

I know it's a long road ahead. I'm already putting in for NM (currently a resident), AZ (just starting), WY, and CO. Will also probably do Idaho and a couple others for sheep.

OK good you are working your way down the ladder then. The other obvious one is Nevada, but it's hard to say if that's worth it now for a guy starting from zero. There are thousands of guys with squared points ahead of you. That really buries a newbie but makes it tough to calculate. The other thing to keep in mind is these point schemes are constantly under attach from point devaluing legislators. So target 3-5 point units to minimize your losses.

I drew my second bull tag with only 2 points a couple years ago. Wasatch archery. Ended up blowing the herd out on my only good chance at a bull, but it was a blast anyway.

I will disagree with you on this notion that Utah is not a state to apply to, unless you are going after the marque hunts. If you are going after the early rifle elk in San Juan or Henry Mountains rifle deer, then you might be in for the long haul.

You can hunt general deer every few years if you choose to. The pronghorn odds are not horrible. The Late Elk hunts are easier to draw and a tag can be gotten by someone that starts at ground 0 and does their homework within their lifetime. The LE deer is adding hunts into the mix with late ML hunts. The OIL hunts are just a raffle, but you can always get lucky.

I look at it like Nevada and Arizona. You can use opportunity deer hunts to make use of the license money along the way to an elk tag or OIL tag that you want to draw. The deer tags are not expensive either.

I am off my 5 year wait/6th year to apply gig on my LE elk and when I draw my tag again it will be my 3rd LE Bull Elk tag....

I don't think there is a 'Bad' LE Bull elk unit in Utah---
