I will have 16 points as a Nonresident next year?

That's way more general season deer points than you need to draw a tag!!!!

We all forget the important details from time to time. That's why we're so qualified to give you a hard time.

BTW: let me check some numbers and I'll get back to you with my recommendations for a NR LE deer hunter.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-03-16 AT 11:23AM (MST)[p]16 points won't get you much as a Non Resident. But, it looks like you could hunt the Book Cliffs, South Slope Diamond Mtn, or Vernon units either Archery, Rifle or Muzzy.

The Book Cliffs seems to kick out a few real great bucks and most archery guys find them easier than the rifle hunters. There are always a few excellent bucks taken with a rifle however but you have to give it the whole season and be very selective. I've had a few friends hunt this unit but I have little personal experience with the unit in recent years.

Diamond mountain has the odd monster too but there's going to be some tip-toeing around all the private land. We own a nice chunk right in the heart of the unit so I know very little about the public stuff. I've seen a couple pigs shot on the unit by MM members and you could possibly find their hunts in the archives.

Vernon is another unit where guys seem to shoot too early in their hunt and don't give it enough time to produce one of the giants that lives in the area. A friend followed a buck for a few years (without a tag) that was as big as any mule deer gets but I don't think he was ever killed by a hunter. I've hunted this unit twice and it can be challenging but rewarding.

There's my limited overview of the units you could draw.

Wow too many pts for the books and not enough for the other top tier hunts. Try the books and get back in the elk game. IMO

Point creep confuses how many points each hunt takes, because it's continually increasing.

You're 7-12 years away from Pauns archery tag.
You're 9-14 years away from Pauns muzzy tag.
You're 17-24 years away from Pauns rifle tag.

No bonus tags given to NR on Henry Mtns for archery or muzzy.
You're 161-230 years from the Henry rifle tag.

You'll need to decide if you're willing to wait 10-15 years for the Pauns or archery or muzzy. If not, you're looking at the Books, Vernon or Diamond. Longer wait than these would be San Juan at 3-5 years, but it just depends on when you wanna hunt.

I wouldn't trust Zeke's numbers if I were you.

Going off his numbers I was guaranteed a D sheep on Zion with 4 points. :p

.....as it should be!
Hey, you drew BH sheep with 4 points so why not a D sheep tag now that you have 4? ha

Back to the LE deer discussion: You'll be happy if you take the excellent advice of some of the guys on here and draw a dang tag. Don't wait another 10-20 years for a tag since you could be hunting a quality deer unit next year. Too many things can/will change/happen in the next decade or two. Go hunt!
