South Cache Elk

Has anyone hunted the South Cache for elk before? I am just wanting to know what kind of a bull you would be looking to kill and if there are a lot of elk in the unit.

250 to 310 unless you get lucky. Not hard to be in elk every day if you know the unit.
I understand the wildlife board may have raised the age objective the other day.

Thank you, if anyone else has any info feel free to PM me. My dad is thinking about buying a permit for there and he was told 350+ by the seller which seems like a stretch to me. Don't want him to get screwed

I have not hunted that unit but they manage for 6.75 yr old bulls, which I think would produce 350 bulls. However, according the dwr stats, the last 3 years the average age of harvested bulls is 5.6, which would pretty much make it a 300-330 bull unit. This has also resulted in a 81 tag reduction for this year. I would think there would still be some 350's wandering around, but not as many as there should be.

One of my friends hunted that unit last year during the archery season. He ended up shooting a really nice 6x7 bull that scored around 335-340. He had shots at smaller bulls but wanted to shoot the best bull he could find. He hunted for 13 days before finding the bull he ended up shooting.

My dad archery hunted it last year and probably took the biggest or one of the biggest bulls of the year out of there 374". But... action was very limited and we did not see any other bulls over 320. I've hunted lots of other states/units that I think we're much better overall.

I guess it depends on how much the tag is and what he's expecting. I would not expect a 350" bull from what I saw. Maybe the later hunts rifle or muzzeloader are better. I think 300-320 is probably the most realistic.

320 is realistic if you hunt hard. You do see a few larger pulled out each year but it is not what is once was. Tags were cut significantly this year (as noted above).
