Can't believe I finally got a Utah tag. Anyone else get lucky? Sure would appreciate any experiences in this area.

My 12 year old drew the tag for general rifle - hope we can find his first Utah mule deer. He is so excited.

We hunt the unit every year for Archery. Great unit and you will see tons of deer. The weather will play a big factor on the rifle hunt. Shoot me a PM and I can give you a few areas to check out.

Went on an Elk hunt there in 2014. TONS of spikes and 2-pointer's. I only saw one 3-point, and one 4-point. The 4-point was on the front side south of Monticello. But glass out with a spotting scope. Look up high near the peaks, or down off that Peak road on the front side.

Have you been scouting yet.

I hear the numbers are good,
Deer are in fine shape. Hoping for good rain fall.

Sounds great ... should be fun. Any of you planning to stay a night after the hunt ends? Either in Monticello or Blanding.
If we happen to run into each other after the hunt ,it would be cool to share a drink and swap stories.

My hunt is in Sept.

I hunted there back in 2004 for muzzleloader deer. We went west from Monticello on 101 which takes you straight up into public land. We killed a couple small bucks and were happy with them. If I'd been by myself I'd have spent more time looking for a bigger buck. I did put a sneak on a raghorn bull elk that I thought was a great mule deer. All I could see were his top forks sticking up out of the brush. Got to about 50 yards before I could see his body.

One evening after sunset about 5 or 6 different bulls started bugling in the oak brush down below me. I just found a spot to sit down and listened to the music for about a half hour.

Enjoy your hunt!

The critters have to win every time. I only have to win once.

Sept is a golden time to listen to those Bulls talking on the Blues.
I don't care which tag I draw Archery,ML,Rifle they are all good, Just like the area have a bunch of good friends down in that neck of the woods.
