Surrendered tag... it hurts.

Turned in an archery bull elk Central Manti tag. I pulled another archery elk tag in AZ and would not be able to dedicate two weeks to the Utah hunt at the end of the season like I originally planned. After 14 years of applying, just don't want to do a short hunt. Hope someone on here is the lucky recipient next in line and has a great hunt. With the archery dates this year, I really wanted to do this hunt but will just have to wait. It hurts to turn this tag back in, but knowing I can hunt next year sure helps. Good luck to everyone that pulled a tag.

Situations like this make you appreciate the Utah tag surrender option. They do it right. Sure glad they have the option when you've been putting in for so long. Plus, reissuing the tag to a new hunter, only makes sense.

I believe you are in the minority in actually following the process as how it was intended to occur.
Most people scout up to the day before the season and if they don't find a specific animal they want to hunt they turn the tag in, leaving someone with no time to scout.
Kudos to you for enabling someone to fully enjoy the experience.

You did the right thing! The pressure of having 2 primo tags in the same year would take the fun right out of it, IMO. Now you have a whole nother year to anticipate next years Utah hunt.

At least you have the points to draw again, I surrendered a bookcliffs tag last year that I drew in the random pool. I started a new job and couldn't get the time I felt needed. It'll be a long long time before I ever see a Utah elk tag again.

Ouch. That hurts a whole lot more than my situation. Hope you get lucky again and have the time to hunt.

Good for you!
Giving someone else a chance to scout and enjoy the tag is what it's all about. I surrendered an excellent tag last year. It was a first for me but I had 2 other great hunts which conflicted. I gave it back on the very next day after receiving it in the mail. Luckily, I have the tag again this year and can dedicate some real quality time to it.
The system works well but sadly some abuse it.

ZEKE ... can You offer process needed for a returning tag.Or is it like NV ? Early as possible and returnee looses cost of tag without doctor excuse, but keeps all B.P.plus this years,
thanks for Your time ... Bruce & SilverGrand

It was a year ago but as I remember there are 2 forms online from the Fish and Game and I just took it down to the Springville office. I DID get a partial refund because it was surrendered early enough and all points were reinstated.
I'm sure you could do the same by mailing it in if dropping by an office is inconvenient.
I hope that helps.

sludge it has not been "turned in" until you have it in hand and send it back....still time to reconsider.

Actually, when I called UDW to verify what forms were needed, the individual I talked to just took all my information down and said that they would handle it seeing that the tag had not been issued yet. So it's already in process and out of my hands. Made it nice and simple. I'll just be watching for my refund and points return over the next month or two. Hopefully it's taken care of correctly.

"Good form" sludge!

I think you will not regret your choice and someone will applaud you!

Before it was possible to surrender in Utah, I drew a limited entry deer in Utah and one in Nevada as well. I had a young family, limited time off work, and both units were a half day drive away. I tried to do them both and but limited time and resources resulted in me not doing justice to either hunt. It's better to focus on one and do it right.
The Utah hunt will come around again in a year or two!

Good luck in AZ!

How is the alternate list made? Do they have a NR and R list ? does a NR tag that gets surrendered go to a R or does it stay in the NR pool? Does points go into play for the list also?

Curious how they get the alternate list and how they determine where the returned tags go to.

I drew a south cache muzzy tag 2 - 3 years ago and had to surrender it because of work. I drew that tag in the random and haven't been lucky enough to draw it again.

"Go hunt for meat at Walmart."

I have received a surrendered permit. Good on ya for turning it in early. When I got mine I had 2 months to scout and actually knew the person that turned in the tag!
