My 12 year old son was lucky enough to draw an antlerless elk tag his first year for the late season on Panguitch Lake. We are just looking for some areas where these critters winter so I can help him have a fun hunt and try to put some meat in the freezer. Thanks in advance.

Look around Horse Valley, Little Creek, Haycock creek area, Katey Jeep trail,William springs, they all have elk in and around.

Thanks Gator, I appreciate the info. I just want him to have a good experience and see some game. Killing one will be the icing on the cake.

My son drew the same tag. Although he is 28 and not 12. Maybe we will see you on the mountain. We will help with any thing we can. It just depends on how much snow we have. They maybe outside of the fields in town or up higher above in the deep snow. So we use snowmobiles if we have a lot of snow. Good luck.

We have some tags for the hunt that starts Dec 5. My 12 year old also has his first cow tag. I can let you know what we see

Best of luck to you guys TLF. I would appreciate any info you are willing to share. It's great to see the youth excited about hunting.

My boy only hunted a week ago Saturday.I didn't go. But he and his friend were off of Hwy 20 Bear Valley. They didn't see anything. Really muddy that weekend.

Thanks for the reply bigjohnt. Hopefully the snow has pushed them down to more accessible areas.

My old man lucked out and found a herd of cows on opening day of his hunt. Shot a cow on the uphill side of a road and a friend pulled her down the hill and into his truck. He is disabled so elk are hard for him to get. He had the late season bull tag on Panguitch Lake a few years ago and was unable to fill his tag. Hunting elk on that unit can be rough. But they are there.

The smile on his face says it all. Those are days you never forget. The cost of that cow all told was probably pretty steep but it's always money well spent seeing the kids succeed.

Good deal, that hunt is a good one with snow, Love hunting them in the snow.
That grin tells it all. Congrats to the young gun.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread as my brother, nephew and I have this same tag this year. I am familiar with the area and know where the elk are in the summer ranges. However, I am a little less familiar with where they are in the winter. I have a few ridges in mind to get started with, but was curious with so little snow in the Panguitch Lake area where the elk will be this winter. We are planning on hunting the weekend of January 6th. If anyone makes it up there earlier in the hunt and wouldn't mind letting me know where they are seeing elk, we would really appreciate it. I will also be putting in a call the Cedar City DWR office to get some insight as well.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to PM me. Once we make our trip, I will be happy to share what we experience as well for anyone hunting up until the last weekend of this hunt.

Can't wait to get out there!!!

They are still in there late summer areas with the weather. I was out tracking a hit cow elk today at 10000 ft where they were in August.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-17 AT 10:10AM (MST)[p]it sounds like the unit is pretty accessible this year with the lack of weather? Headed up in the morning.

Will do. Got in to some today but too far and/or moving too fast. They don't seem to be herded up like normal for this time of year and not pushed down to lower areas. Everything up high still.

My boy has the same tag again this year. Went down on the 28th of Dec and you could drive a truck to 10,500 ft with little to no snow. Needless to say the cows were still in spots where most would second guess taking a large bull. Hopefully some snow flies prior to Fri as we headed back down for the final days of the hunt. Best of luck to you all.

We were there the same time... and same experience! A lot of sign while driving at 10k foot but seemed everything was just passing through. My dad is back over now and said it has been snowing and not able to get around well so, hopefully that will push some animals down as well

We were unsuccessful on this hunt. The DWR biologist also said that the success has been very low. Me and my brother hiked 13 miles over two days and saw only two cows at 1200 yards. We closed the distance only to find that they had moved off the ridge where we spotted them. There was elk sign everywhere we looked (9500 - 10000 ft), but they must be moving around so much, it was tough to try to run into them. I would be shocked if the success rate this year ends up being over 30%.

We were unsuccessful as well. I hope the low number doesn't equate to a lot of extra tags next year. Seems these elk could use the break from the fire and hunting pressure.

With no snow and a large area they could be scattered to h#ll and gone. No need for them to move lower yet.
But that area will need a good snowfall to get everything back growing for the spring calves that ground moisture is key.

IMO, from scouting pre fire and right back up again post fire and hunted it all thru archery, there is no way in hades there are 1700 elk on this unit. They are spread out from one end to the other, but at the end of it all my counts came out 50/50, just as many bulls seen as I saw cows. I think the population estimate is flat out wrong.
