Willard Peak Nanny tag

been up there 8 or 9 Times in the last 2 years looking at Goats and hiking. Just getting worried about shooting the wrong goat. I know a big billy when I see one but everything else looks similar. Kinda wish they would send a goat expert to say yes or no so there was no worries. any tips on sex ID would be appreciated, the DWR 10 min course really doesn't help.

You are not alone. Almost every year someone shoots a younger billy thinking it is a nanny on Willard Peak. It is easy to get excited and take a quick or long shot. UDWR will tell you to watch them take a piss and see if they squat or not. People like you that try to learn before the hunt are a lot better off than the people who get on the internet the night before the hunt opens and try to figure it out. The more time you spend on the mountain the better you will get at determining which is which.

I drew the nanny tag in 2011 on WP and had to surrender it because I moved away right before season. I don't know how many more years it will take me to draw now that I am chasing a billy tag as a non-resident with only 13 points.

Good luck.

I have helped on several hunts and spent many hrs chasing goats on Willard Peak. If you're patient you'll find a goat you know is a nanny. I would suggest you look up The Rocky Mountian Goat Allaince web page. Or find them on Instagram. They have literally 100s of pictures and tutorials about telling the difference. There are some really nice nannies on Willard. Good luck and have fun hunt.

Hey muley_73

I grew up with your younger brother small world. Thanks for the info guys, I will definitely look up that website and get in a few more hikes to try and get better at sex ID. I drew this tag with 2 points so feel fortunate to have this OIL tag, just hate the thought of shooting the wrong goat, that would be a bad day.

Don't make any quick decisions and you will be fine. Most likely the nannies will have kids around. So you will know which is which if you take your time.

The biologist for that unit is Chad Wilson.

You are in luck. Chad is a good guy. Chad is doing a goat classification on August 11.
If you are serious about getting some help, contact chad.

Should be something like chad wilson @ utah.gov or something like that.
You can look it up, or contact the Ogden office and they will connect you with him.
His office is in Ogden.

I am sure he would be willing to have you come along and learn while they are classifying goats.

You will learn more about sex, age, and the herd in that one day than you will looking on the internet.

You have a few days to get a hold of him and work something out. I would do it if you have questions and doubts.

Do your homework. Use everything you have learned to id them. Horn curvature, mass, etc. On top of that wait till it pees. That's the best way to tell.
