What to expect?

i have a Panguich lake general deer tag this year and it will be my first time hunting the great state of Utah. It is a friend of a friend type of deal and I really don't know much about the hunt or area other than our acomidations will be a beautiful cabin near the Brian Head ski area. He's been on a couple of family trips up there this summer and has been sending me pics of bucks but most have been small and from the front seat of his Polaris ranger. So what can I expect should I put in some real work or just enjoy the comrodery of deer camp and take the first buck I see. Thanks for anything shared looking forward to hunting your state.

The Panguitch Lake has been producing some nice deer the last few years. The unit has the genetics and terrain to produce some 160-180 bucks every year with patience and discipline hunting. I would let the opening weekend warriors get out of there and then things should get much better from Tuesday night on. Focus on the last part of the hunt. Look for a deer that meets your expectations or eat your tag. Congratulations on a fun hunt with some great potential.

What can you expect? Expect to have a great hunt and expect to get home safely.

You're obviously with someone who knows the area, so just follow his lead and you should be just fine. It's easy to get lost or hurt up there and hiking in somewhere by yourself may not be the best idea.

As for the hunting, look for the deer alright, but don't miss the beauty of the place. There are red sandstone canyons and lava beds and extinct volcanoes and ice caves and flowered meadows and all kinds of flora and fauna and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets!

And, yes there are some awesome bucks up there (and elk and antelope). That unit has been over the deer population objective for quite a few years and is now over the buck to doe ratio as well, but there hasn't been an increase in tags since 2014, so many of those bucks have had some time to grow headgear and you may not want to shoot the first one you see. However, I personally wouldn't eat a tag either. It never made sense to me to go home empty handed simply because a legal animal that I worked hard for and that presented an ideal shot wasn't a wall hanger. They all look the same next to the potatoes and gravy.

Have a great time and please give us a report no matter how it turns out!

Oh, and don't worry about hunting with the weekend warriors. They keep the deer moving.

Wow thanks for the responses guys my buddy may have his daughter with us on the hunt if she doesn't fill her tag earlier so if that is the case I'll be getting away from the roads while they are trying to get an easy one for her first deer. I'll hold out for a big one as long as I can and I will post a report can't wait to see the place I heard it's beautiful.

Look up some of places your buddy has told you about on Goggle earth it will help get the bird eye view of the places you will be hunting.

Like stated above bring a GPS because u can get lost up there in certain areas. It's flat and thick on top so you can easily get turned around! Lots of nice bucks up there shoot something u like. I don't think u need to stick a forky but with it bein ur first time don't be too picky.
Good luck I've seen dandies on that unit. Also remember u cannot hunt in the cedar breaks boundaries!! The deer will stand in the open meadows in the park and tempt u but do not do it!

No haha I never got lost up there elkass.
But I did carry a GPS with me up there just in case. I won't lie I almost got turned around one night chasing a bull right near dark and by the time it got to dark I was Definently turned around. It took me a min to get my bearings straight I didn't use the GPS but I was about to pull it out.
