What can you expect? Expect to have a great hunt and expect to get home safely.
You're obviously with someone who knows the area, so just follow his lead and you should be just fine. It's easy to get lost or hurt up there and hiking in somewhere by yourself may not be the best idea.
As for the hunting, look for the deer alright, but don't miss the beauty of the place. There are red sandstone canyons and lava beds and extinct volcanoes and ice caves and flowered meadows and all kinds of flora and fauna and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets!
And, yes there are some awesome bucks up there (and elk and antelope). That unit has been over the deer population objective for quite a few years and is now over the buck to doe ratio as well, but there hasn't been an increase in tags since 2014, so many of those bucks have had some time to grow headgear and you may not want to shoot the first one you see. However, I personally wouldn't eat a tag either. It never made sense to me to go home empty handed simply because a legal animal that I worked hard for and that presented an ideal shot wasn't a wall hanger. They all look the same next to the potatoes and gravy.
Have a great time and please give us a report no matter how it turns out!
Oh, and don't worry about hunting with the weekend warriors. They keep the deer moving.
