wasatch moose

Drew a wasatch moose with max points but not seeing much after months of scouting. I'm considering turning tag in. I have a bum knee and it is such a large area I'm wondering if another unit next year would be better? Maybe east canyon or CWMU. Any advice?

Not sure if you're serious, but it's too late to turn your tag in and get a refund. Plus you'll only give the next person in line 2 weeks to scout before the opener, but that's up to you...

My advice would be to talk with every hunter you see in the field and ask them if they've seen a bull. I know I'd gladly offer up information and help you pack it if I had seen anything other than yearling bulls so far.

Well I don't know what your idea of much is. However you should look around the Mill Hollow are. I drew that tag last year. After looking in several areas south and east a couple months before. I settled there and shot my bull the next morning without having any time to scout the area out. There were moose everywhere around this area last year. Good luck, your way late now to do much but keep hunting!!

you dont seem to have much knowledge as far as hunting and regulations go from what ive gathered in your posts. you also dont seem to know much as far as actual hunting goes either, yet you sure shoot off "definite" answers...

actually HE CAN still turn in his tag AND if he gets a medical note, can still receive a refund, in full (minus the app fee) clear up until the day before that hunt for that units starts, which would be 9/16/2016 @ 5:00 PM. any time AFTER that time, they would not be able to turn it back in... learn the regs, cuz you kinda look like an idiot spouting off about stuff you dont know.

as far as the actual hunt goes, the moose get much more active when the rut starts. id keep the tag. its only going to get better from here on out. the bulls are there, the cows will bring them out of hiding. just like elk, hunt the cows, the bulls will be with them as well.

ps, id look up in the hobble creek area. theres alot more moose up there than people realize

While I'm not going to disagree with your first statement, I do have a question with regards to the turn in; I read this as OIAL tags can't be surrendered within 30 days? Any clarity is appreciated!

"Refunds may be issued if:

1. The person holding the permit, license or COR becomes so ill or injured as to prevent that person from participating in the activity for which the permit was issued.
...
6. The permit is a once-in-a-lifetime or limited-entry permit that was surrendered to the DWR no less than 30 days before the season opening date. (To surrender one of these permits and request a refund, use the Permit surrender form.) This type of refund is subject to a $25 handling fee. If the fee is higher than the cost of your permit, you will not receive a refund."

LAST EDITED ON Sep-02-16 AT 09:18PM (MST)[p]My own moose hunting experience has been that, contrary to deer and elk hunting, you will see a lot more moose during the hunt than before the hunt.

Until the weather cools big black bodies hate the heat, and like to remain in the shade during the day. Once it starts to freeze at night and the ladies get hot, the bulls will jump to their feet and be more visible. The leaves dropping also makes a difference in spotting moose. Despite being big and black, they are much better at hiding than people would give them credit.

If it were my tag, I would hang on to it, unless that knee is really giving you fits. On the other hand packing one out with a bum knee would not be easy. Make sure you have help.

Thanks for all the advice. I had my knee injected couple of months ago and has been good until now. I may just need another injection to get me through. I did confirm that i can turn the tag in but probably going to stick it out. I have seen 2 bulls and about 8 cows. Larger was about 40 inches. I have been at top of big and little cottonwoods, silver lake in american fork, lake creek above heber, cascade springs and lambs canyon. Hobble fork is on my list. Thanks for the well wishes

read the part there it says "REFUNDS MAY BE ISSUED IF:"

its only talking about turning in a tag if you are wanting a REFUND as well as your points back and/or waiting period removed. you have up until the day before your hunt starts to turn in a tag

I saw a monster bull on the east side of Tabby mountain last year. It was the last day of the hunt so i am sure he is still there somewhere

He was low, down in the WMA can't remember what road it is up from the Tabby turn off on hwy 40. But I do remember my pa telling me it was the road that went to the old boy scout camp up there. Hope this helps. Also saw a decent bull right next to hwy 40 tonight on the way home from lagoon. Just about 2 miles east of Daniels summit on the north side.

I have been scouting the kamas unit since I found out I drew the tag. I have only found small bull and a couple of cows. Reading this gives me hope I will see more once the hunt starts. If anyone has seen anything on the kamas unit any help would be great
