Wasatch mid hunt

Any thoughts on the new hunt? What are thoughts on points it will take to draw and is it worth burning very many points on? Haven't hunted during the spike hunt on the wasatch in several years.
Thanks

It will take 10 or 11 points minimum to get in the bonus tags.

And the Wasatch elk herd is nothing like it used to be.
Lots of empty public ground were elk once roamed.

IMO,
There are better options for elk.

Totally guessing, but I would assume it will take 10-12 points to draw the mid-season Wasatch tag as a resident in 2017. I think it could be worth the points, but I would opt for a muzzleloader tag instead on there instead. You only need 9 for muzzleloader, historically.

New hunts are always interesting to see after the draws. If you go on www.toprut.com the 2nd Rifle elk hunts are the mid-season hunts, the 3rd rifle hunts are the late season hunts. You can look at other units with 3rd season hunts and see how they compare from the year before they started the mid-season hunt until now.

They are offering a rifle hunt starting I think oct 7-19th on Wasatch. So there will be three rifle hunts there this year. They started doing this a couple years ago on some units. But this is first yr for Wasatch. It should increase drawing odds for the early rifle some I would think. I'd like to know everyone's opinion on Wasatch or the nebo unit for elk? I'm open to any season. I don't have enough points for either but the random odds aren't terrible for either. I've been applying muzzy. Thanks for any info!

Thomas11,

Something you need to be aware of.

The mid-season permits will most likely be pulled from
the current existing permits.

Also, I've herd talk of reducing overall Wasatch pernits
for 2017.

This will result with FEWER early rifle permits for 2017.
This move will decrease drawing odds for the early hunt.

IMO, right now,
The Wasatch elk herd is i the poorest codition right now as it
has been for several years, and the Nebo is on an upswing.

>good info! Thanks. My only concern with the nebo is I've heard it has access issues but it looks to have plenty public land.

I wouldn't waste more then 2 points on that hunt. Cow and spike hunters everywhere elk will be scarce as goofy said this unit is in poor shape

This will be a tough hunt unless you already hunt the unit for spike and know what to expect. Better off early or late hunt. The Wasatch is still a great unit and from what I'm seeing there will be a lot of happy elk hunters this year!

Thanks for the input. I went ahead and put in with what I would think is enough to draw. Hopefully I won't regret it! My thought process is most the spike hunters head home after the first weekend and then it should be a good hunt as long as the elk can still be located after being pushed all over the place.

Hopefully 12 points wasn't too many to burn if I do draw. It's going to be a long 2.5 months waiting to find out if I'll finally get my turn to chase elk on the wasatch.

Looks like luck (or having lots of points) was on my side! Now for the real question. Would you hunt the north or south end of the unit? Far more familiar the north end of the unit, but know the cow tags put a dent in the herd up there. Can't wait to get out there and see what I can find!

I bet the DNR gets alot of calls on these hunts from people who have no idea the midhunt is going. "Someone just poached a big bull on the spike hunt." I can see it right now.

>Way to go xbow!!! That bull
>looks way worthy of 12
>pts!
