OIL tag turn in because of health

What is the rule to turn in your tag if you draw a oil tag. Because of health reasons. My dad is 80 years old and he has been waiting for years to draw a Bison tag. We are not going to wait any longer. He has had heart problems among other things. Just got a passmaker put in. We are going to get in done this year as long as he can get out and about. What is the deadline to turn the tag back in if he is not able to go. With getting his points back and money. If it's to close to the hunt just to get his points back. Thanks

You have to have a doctors note to turn a tag back in and get your money back.
You can turn a tag right before the hunt starts and get your points back. I would suggest that if you have any idea that you will be turning the tag back in to do it ASAP that way whoever gets the tag has some time to prepare for the hunt and scout the area.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-17 AT 07:12PM (MST)[p]Both of the answers above are incorrect. This is directly from wildlife.utah.gov/refund. I went through the process last year and it was really simple. I received a refund and my points were reinstated without any illness or injury.

Refunds may be issued if:

The person holding the permit, license or COR becomes so ill or injured as to prevent that person from participating in the activity for which the permit was issued.

The activity for which the permit, license or COR was issued was cancelled by the DWR.

The DWR has erroneously collected a fee.

Members of the military called to active duty before the permit, license or COR was used.

The person to whom the permit, license or COR was issued dies prior to the authorized activity.

The permit is a once-in-a-lifetime or limited-entry permit that was surrendered to the DWR no less than 30 days before the season opening date. (To surrender one of these permits and request a refund, use the Permit surrender form.) This type of refund is subject to a $25 handling fee. If the fee is higher than the cost of your permit, you will not receive a refund.

If they haven't changed the rule you can postpone your tag for a year once you have drawn it, if you have an acceptable medical reason. A few years ago my wife drew Mt. Goat. By the time the hunt rolled around she was way pregnant. They let her just hunt the next year.

Bessy is right, I was called 2 days before the archery Deer and Elk hunt and told that Myself and Son could have Book Cliff archery Deer tags that had been turned in. I POLITELY declined as we had bought the otc elk tags along with my wife and daughter, had tree stands hung, pattered the elk and had other family coming. I told them I really thought 2 days before the hunt wasn't enough time,...I might have used more adjectives.

Shed, How did you get a refund and your pts back without being injured, sick or dead?

My brother turned in a bookclifs archery bull tag two seasons ago and got his point and most of the money back with no excuse other then I can't make the hunt.

That's the regulation in Utah. It's a great regulation as long as folks turn a tag back in with enough notice. Sometimes things happen though.
