Congrats to all that drew. It's been a long while since I posted here and couldn't remember my old username, so just re-registered.
Looks like a pulled a BC elk tag for the late hunt as a NR in the random pool. I have previously read anything and everything on this hunt I could find on this hunt, so I have that knowledge as a starting point. I have 14 or 15 deer points as well, and will be heading to the Book Cliffs next year or the following, hopefully, on the archery deer hunt.
Knowing that I'll probably only draw one more UT elk tag in my life, unless I get really lucky, I want to maximize this tag and do everything I can to score on a quality bull. As a NR, with a busy life and 3 other hunts already planned this year, that means getting as much local help as I can.
I have spoken with one outfitter, and they seem like great people, which doesn't surprise me as I had already done as much research as I could prior to contacting them other than talking to prior clients. However, I would be remiss to not do as much due diligence on options. To that end, if some of you "in the know" are willing to share your opinion, via PM or on this thread, about who you'd hire and how you would approach this hunt, I'd appreciate it.
I have killed some decent bulls on my own, along with several mountain goats, pronghorn, deer, etc., so I don't need someone to "hold my hand," but I do need an outfit that is intimately familiar with the unit, and can spend the time scouting, both during and before the hunt, to make sure I get the most out of this tag.
Any advice would be appreciated, and I hope everything has a safe and enjoyable 2017 season. Looking forward to my first hunt in Utah.
