I drew a Goat Tag!!!

There are goats all over Timp and they walk right up to you, you might need to shoot one out of self defense up there.

Pretty easy to get, huh? The challenge might be in finding a special one. Maybe I'll have to try and get one with my bow.

Yep just hold a handful of grass in one hand. Then trying to draw you bow back with one hand may be tough. Look for a good one and have fun with it !

I'm looking at a couple of those peaks right now. It's going to be a great adventure.
Congrats,

Congrats Founder! I hope it's a great season for you.
I got another no draw which makes 7 years no draw for Limited Deer.

Sweet tag Brian. I know a couple guys that have killed on this hunt and will keep an eye out for billies on the extended. I always see a few each year.
And definitely go with the bow.

I would watch the weather and try to hunt the later part of the season and smack a billy that has a better coat than the early season ones. just a matter of how patient you want to be. but Def glass a bunch before you decide. There is some really nice billys in that unit.

Congrats on a great tag. Start looking at pics as they are one of the hardest game animals to judge. Try for a big old billy w/ 9-10 inch horns and good mass through the horn.

Congrats on drawing the tag Brian!!!
The hardest part of a mountain goat hunt is drawing the tag. Do some scouting (I don't need to tell you that) and look at lots of goats until you find one that you like. They are VERY hard to judge between a big one and an average one. After you look at several goats you will know a good one when you see it.

In my opinion the hair is the trophy on a goat. go as late as you can without getting snowed out.

The hunt runs until the end of November. I'm thinking I probably won't even get after it until October. I'm thinking that I'll be doing some 3-4 day backpacking trips and just looking at as many as I can and try to be picky and find a bigger one. I know nothing, so I need to look at some goats and try to get an idea of what is a "special" one. Need to be shooting some arrows!!!

I think I'll be doing some serious vertical climbing this year!!

Now, how the heck are you gonna get to hunt Monster Muley's this year if your chasing goats around in October and November?!

Ide say congratulations on drawing the tag, but any "other" tag that has dates running in that Oct 15 to Nov 15 time frame is interfering with what's really important. :p

Jk(kind of). Good luck & give em hell.

Congrats Brian,
You have much of the battle already won by being in good shape.
I spend time in that area and know a few lucky past hunters. Dikndirt arrowed a nice billy up their. You might try PMing him for advice.

Double check the Watershed Restrictions and you should be fine on a 3-4 day backpack in hunt.

Congrats Brian

LAST EDITED ON May-25-17 AT 12:26PM (MST)[p]My Dad (dikndirt) and I have both drawn the tag. Super fun hunt, but not necessarily a cake walk for a big billy with a bow. You will see plenty of goats, but the mature billy's tend to hang alone in the nastiest country they can find or on top of the world. Do it with your bow, it was a lot of fun. If you have a deer tag for the same area that will be a bonus. Congrats on drawing and be safe! How many points did you have?

I don't know much about goats but here's a goat I found in early november last year. He looks like a good one to me but i've never scored a goat. If he looks good and you want some more details let me know.

Very cool Bocephus. You guys did great. How tough was it to get them with a bow?

I sure appreciate all the offers on tips and such to get started. I should be able to get it all figured out. It'll just require a few backpacking trips to find where goats.

Several Locals that I've WARNED have ended up Shootin Nanny's!

Why?

Because they Looked for the Biggest/Longest Horn in the Bunch & BOOMED Them!

The Good Thing is the DWR Made most Goat Tags Either Sex!

I'm sure there's not Quite as many being Wasted after the Shooter walks up to them & notices:GOOD GAWD,I Shot a Nanny!

Still bet it happens though!

Congrats Founder,

I have been putting in for that tag for 18 years (stupid me for not buying a point on the other years). I used to hike up timp on the opener just to sit and glass the other hunters. I called it my self pity hike. The goats on timp are much more used to people than the lone peak and provo peak goats. The big billies do like to move off solo.

On one of my hikes I walked up to about 50 yards and took these pics of goats chillin on the last of the snow. The crazy part is they had just had a nanny shot out of their group not one hour before I took the photos.

This is kind of funny but if you can't get close, take a pee on some grass. My brother was backpacking in the wind rivers. One morning he noticed a goat eating the grass where he peed. After that every time he or his buddy peed the goats came over to eat the grass.

They are super tough animals so make a good bow shot. Here's a diagram for you.

I don't know if it was the salt in the urine or what but here is another pic showing how the goat wouldn't leave them alone.

this nanny and kid were there too.

That was a nice Billy you let go. Good luck on finding a smarter, harder one Haha! Lot's of guys have hunted hard to have an opportunity like that. Hope you find what you are looking for in your hunt.

That was pretty wild, sounds like that was more of a national park goat that lets you get within 20 yards. I respect you didn't shoot the goat, but I would bet most would have shot him earlier (and you probably almost did) or attempted a shot before they ever figured out he was on the tame side of the spectrum. You just turned me off from goat hunting! I always thought it would be a blast to chase them with a bow. For those that have done it, is this normal behavior or the opposite?

I have had a little experience on hunting Mt. Goats and would say that is not the normal behavior of Mt. Goats on most units. Timpanogos is a little different in that the goats in that unit become accustomed to seeing ALOT of people and do become somewhat tame, they are a wild animal however and to find a Billy that is in a good spot to shoot with a bow is not the norm.

Other than attitude, is it any different than shooting a deer from a blind at 20 yards. I guess you could say it is like shooting someone elses pet dog.

It's different because you train a deer to come to a blind, intentionally, with grain, apples, or green forage. Then you give it a name. Get weeks of pictures. Surround it with blinds so on any given day the wind can be in your favor. Put out mineral supplements. Condition it to answer a dinner bell.

Oh..........it's different alright.

DC

How far do you want to go down that rabbit hole??

Its different because you drive a 4x4 truck and a 4wheeler, use trail cams, wear designer camo and $400 boots, because you use binocs and a 3x9 scope over a rifle at 600 yards? How about shooting from a treestand not over bait? Aren't you taking advantage of the deer's lack of fear of things in trees? I could go on and on.

What is the "same" is if you go to a game ranch, drive out in the pasture in the truck that feeds the deer, and pick out the animal you want as it looks at you without fear.

Any way you look at it a tame animal is different. Now you can shoot it, as I would a cow moose, because I love the meat. But it is different than anything you describe hunting a wild animal.

If you want to badmouth Founder and others hunting over bait, have at it, but don't compare it to shooting an animal you can walk up to that has no fear of you. Some people can do that and put it on their wall, and to them I say fine. But if I go out to a game ranch a few miles from where I live and shoot a big 250" whitetail, I personally couldn't mount it and put it on my wall. That is what is different to me.

Unless I miss my guess, you probably agree with me, you just want to diss baiting. Where we disagree is you think hunting wild animals over bait = shooting tame animals. Your opinion is just as valid as mine.

Tx, your a wise gentleman and an experienced hunter, I respect you, I understand your logic and agree with you to some degree. Shooting a "pet" is not like hunting and shooting a wild animal.

My point, to Brain, was intended to be the same point I believe Homer was making. That is, I think, sometimes, in the wild, wild animals do strange things, counter to what we consider, typical behavior. Not every animal we ever encounter bolts at the sight of a human, sometimes we work our butts off and when we get back to camp, there's a shooter feeding next to the back of the tent. Sometimes, driving down a road, a shooter animal, on private property jumps the fence, runs across the road, barely missing our vehicle, jumps the fence onto public property and stops. Then stands there broadside, until you kill it. Sometimes, you're 3 miles from the trail head, setting on a ridge and a shooter animal wanders with easy shooting range of what ever weapon you're hunting with.

Most of us, but I guess not all, thank the stars for their good fortune, take home their trophy, and share their unusual good luck with their friends. If some of us walk away under these kinds of circumstances, more power to them them, but I find it a little hard to believe there are more like Founder than there are like Homer.

I've driven up on Willard peek a lot of times, I've seen the goats there, they aren't pets, I've applied for many years for a Mt. Goat tag there, my sons have killed Mt. Goats there and help friends kill Mt. Goats there, so I've had a few trips to the rodeo, on that hunt. The goats on Willard are no more pets than Henries bucks, Fish Lake bull elk, La Sal bears, or Parket Mt. antelope, that see heavy human presence year round and on occasion a hunter will kill an animal on these units, that run right up next to them and shot. Never seen anyone whip out a camera, snap a few pictures, then walk away, but I guess some folks do, according to the comments herein. Far be it from me to holler whoa at a horse race.

As are as I'm concerned, deer shot over food plots are more like farm pets than the Mt Goats on Willard peek. But........we all see the world through the lens of our personal experiences and I should not have been so cavalier, I do apologize for my condescension.

All the best tx, you're a good man.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-17 AT 06:32PM (MST)[p]Yep, there are some strange happenings in the hunting world that can't be explained. This might have been one of them. You make some good points. Hope he has a chance to get back out and try again.

And remember that we are not discussing facts here, or right or wrong, just opinion. :)

No, kind of lost interest after passing on the one I shared in Oct. I'm on the mountain now, but in an area with few goats. If I see one, I may make a play. Found a couple big bucks, so my attention has been on trying to get with one of them. They?re definitely a challenge.
Time is about out. Probably won't get one. Won?t shoot one with my gun. Bow or nothing. Maybe Thursday I'll hit Timp. and see.

Founder, are you going to post in your 2017 hunt challenge about how your late season archery trips have gone? Love your posts. Hope you got some good footage of bucks.

It'll have to be Goat Tag Jerky. No goat for me. Oh well. Just lost the real interest after that darn goat wanted me to pet him. What does a dude do?
I hit Lone Peak serveral days looking for a wild goat, but didn't find any. I thought about returning over to Timp where most of the goats in the unit are, but man, I just couldn't. No excitement for that at all.
I can hang my hat on the fact that I could have shot that Billy. It would have been hard to miss at 9 yards, and he would have just stood there if I missed anyway.
There'll be an extra Billy for someone else next year.

My Trophy Billy - Just pretend it's mounted in my house, without me having to shell out $2500.00.

Gotta respect a man that hunts his own way and on his own terms. As long as your at peace, that's ALL that matters. I have thoroughly enjoyed your thread on this! No doubt you had him dead-to-rights. Thanks for using your hunt, experiences, & pictures to remind me that a successful hunt doesn't have to end with a dead animal. Much respect my friend??

Incredible hair on that Billy. Your tag, your decision.

Some species just have less fear of humans across parts of their range. Their fearlessness might have evolved due to having very few natural predators. That's why you always hear guys say that Mt Goats are "made for bowhunting". Shiras Moose can also behave that way in a lot of areas. Even Bighorn Sheep have been stalked & killed by bowhunters easing in closer and closer in a disinterested, non-chalant manner while staying in full view.

I had the same tag a few years back and thought it was some neat majestic hunt till I located some goats and readied myself for a shot and fired!
I was pumped and fired up as I hiked to my goat.
And then the air quickly was let out as the remainder of the goats milled around as I held my Billy. I was thinking my 300+ yard shot was great till I realized I could have got within a few yards and used a sling shot upside the head of most of them and then collect my trophy. That would have been a hunt then. Then to have every bunnie humper offer their disdain as I packed it out. Just was not the hunt I thought it would be. I wish I would have used my four bonus points on moose?
