My grandpa finally drew his birghorn tag for 9mile unit. Has anyone here been on this hunt and may have some advice on what to expect? We are very excited as he has waited a long time for this tag. I will post pictures as we prepare for this hunt.

Congrats on your tag. The sheep population is down in this unit from years past. A good sheep may be hard to find without someone that has hunted the area many times. The go to guide for sheep in this unit would be Shawn Labrum of Wild Mountain Outfitters. He has guided many Governor's sheep tags and has guided sheep in this unit.

I hunted with him for elk in the Book Cliffs and I can say he's a awesome guide and hunter. He does fully guided and partially guided depending on your needs and budget. His passion is sheep. I would seriously consider hiring him on a once-in-a-lifetime.

Have a great hunt.

Congratulations on drawing a great tag. I'd recommend getting in touch with Coby Hunt from Utah Big Game Outfitters. He lives in Green River and loves to chase sheep. He's helped many sheep hunters kill great rams on that unit. I'm sure he'd tell you what to expect this year. He also knows where several seeps are in remote parts of the unit. He has some great trail cam pics from them.

He helped me when I drew my Henry's deer tag a few years back.
I was a pleasure hunting with him. If I ever draw that hunt he'll be the first call I make. I know he'll work hard to make sure you have the hunt of a lifetime. Plus, he'll kill a great ram!

Good luck and post some pic's of your hunt.

Coby's number is (435)242-0024

LAST EDITED ON May-31-17 AT 09:07PM (MST)[p]I would 2nd Coby. I have heard nothing but good. Not sure if i should reply on Shawn other than he would be last on my list. I would highly recommend Randy Johnson, He is a class act IMHO. Helped me greatly on my desert hunt to shorten my learning curve

How to start an argument online:
1. Express an opinion
2. Wait

Had the tag in 2011 when the season went the whole month of November. Saw 18 mature rams in 3 days of hunting. Killed a 174 ram the 3rd morning. I loved the look of him so it was game over
To kill a good ram you don't need a guide. But you do need to have the ability to hunt hard and move around. If you want a top end ram a guide would give you a better chance.
Do a GRAMA search on the Utah fish and game site and research the harvest data. It will show where rams have been killed in the past and give you a place to start looking. The biologist will be a great help as well.

Thanks guys for your reccomends. I could talk about this upcoming hunt all day!
I am not coming up with any great options for maps. I have a gps, and will get onX, but I want to buy a hard copy map that we can mark up and study. Does anyone have a suggestion on somewhere I can buy a good unit specific map?

Well I may or may not want to see pictures. Definitely may.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-03-17 AT 12:08PM (MST)[p]Well opening morning was good to us. Grandpa couldn't pass up this great ram. Biologist measured him at 179". Couldn't be happier with a great ram and great company! Thank you to all those along the way that provided info on the area and hunt.

Congrats I'll bet that was a fun hunt.

A GUT SHOT at 1,700 Yards will Still Make Some Good BRAGGIN Rights so I Can Say I At Least Hit Him!

Congrats on a great looking ram. Looks like a fun hunt.

Get ready for change because it's going to happen!

No guide was hired... although we do have to give a lot of credit to Coby Hunt. He did point us in the right direction and it sure paid off to listen to him.

Got grandpas sheep back. He had a vision of how he wanted this to look to bring back the memories of the hunt. I'd say it turned out perfect! Ben Nielsen of Quackie pass taxidermy was reffered by many for this project, and I can see why. He took grandpa along for the whole process and really takes pride in his work.
