Book Cliffs Muzzleloader Elk

I unexpectedly drew the muzzy tag for the Book Cliffs Bitter Creek South. Just wondering if anyone has been down there for bulls in the last couple of years and how big of bulls people have been seeing. I've been there a couple times but that was about 10 years ago now when my Dad had the tag. If anyone has pictures of bulls from down there or any tips as to how to find the big ones down there, I'll take anything to pass the time until September

Congrats on the successful draw. You should be in for a great hunt. With a little effort a guy should be successful on a 330-340 bull. We watched one this winter that may go 350 or just over. With out being extremely lucky I would say that is about the high end of what you can expect. It's a neat unit I would definitely say Muzzleloader season you should have no trouble finding bulls to look at but just like any where else the big ones are not around every corner

Like Allout said 330 to 340 class bulls. The spike hunt is not helping.I would take the family down this summer and get familiar with the area again. You will see a lot of elk up high in July. Then I wouldn't go back down till right after the rifle hunt and spend a couple of days looking for a bull.During the rifle hunt every thing changes on a daily basics and all you will do is waste time and money.we killed a 346 two years ago and I have 2 friends with tags this year.So good luck on your hunt.Just remember there are elk way down in the cedars to way up high in the pines.

Congrats on a great tag! How many points did you have?

I was on the Books last year with a buddy for his archery tag. I'd suggest staying mobile and covering lots of country. Lots of elk out there.

Good luck!

I had 8 points this year. Arns, do your friends have muzzy tags as well? I'm setting my sights on a 350" bull but we'll see how long I can keep that standard..

Congrats on a great tag. Book Cliffs bulls generally top out in the 340-350 range. Most won't ever be bigger than that, but there are a few. The muzzleloader hunt still has pretty good rut activity, but most big bulls have gathered their cows by that point and won't come a long distance to a call. What they will do, is scream back and forth at each other and at you, which will let you get right in on them, if you are able to hustle enough to catch them moving. I like to get pretty aggressive on the muzzleloader hunt and run them down as they move through the timber.
If you want to see Book Cliffs animals, check out our website www.huntwithgtoutfitters.com or our social media accounts.
We are on the unit year round, and will be there during the muzzleloader. If you see us on the hill or need any help, feel free to stop into our camp or give us a call.

Good luck,

Yes they have muzzy tags and yes there is some 350 class bulls. But they are few and far between. But they take a couple every year usually during the rifle hunt. With these new muzzleloader and scopes shooting 3 or 4 hundred yards.Anything is possible.
