Ogden West Cow Moose

Well, here is something I didn't think I'd ever see...the word "successful" on a results email! :) I struck out everywhere this year and decided, after speaking with the local biologist, to throw my hat in for the lone Ogden West non-resident cow moose tag and I'll be darned if I didn't draw the thing.

I've started doing my map homework and I'll be talking with the biologist quite a bit through the summer, but I'd love to get any other info folks more familiar with the unit would be willing to share.

I'd be more than happy to give up some great Coues deer locations that you can get on a leftover tag (if you don't mind hunting near the border), or share some moose meat if someone is willing to give me some pointers on where to start/focus, or even if there is a better time during the season to hunt since its open for over a month. My plan is to hunt for a few days with my recurve and then pull out the boom-stick if things aren't going in my favor. My wife would murder me if I dropped this kind of cash on a tag and didn't come home with delicious moose meat!

God Bless,

-Luke

Luke what's the boundary for your hunt. It looks like for the cow moose they split the ogden unit in half. I was just curios where they split it.

Is Willard Peak part of your area. If so I could provide you some pointers on some areas to check out.

Good luck its some really pretty country you will get to go chase that moose in.

Paradise, the boundary is basically 84 on the south, 15 on the west, 165 on the east and 101 on the north. Willard Peak is in this unit, so any insight you have would be greatly appreciated.

Travis, I'll give you a buzz. Thanks for the offer!

The boundary is basically weber canyon north to trappers through the valley over avon and down sardine.

Why are they even offering cow tags?
I thought the Utah herd was in the tank?
So weird.

Nonetheless, Congrats on the tag. Good luck on the hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-17 AT 05:46PM (MST)[p]I've been in that unit hard for the last several years. I've seen a decent number of both cows and bulls the last two or three years.
Last summer and fall I had several close encounters with both bulls and cows and saw several calves as well.
The habitat there is remarkably well for moose.

I can't say much for other areas but the time I've spent in the Ogden would tell me the moose are doing good!

If I recall correctly, one was hit by a car last summer on the west side of Pineview

Yea the there coming back, I just wish they would issuer a few more bull tags and lay off the cows.

I'll be leaving in about 1/2 an hour to go hike up there on the south end of your unit.

I'll keep ya posted on any dry cow moose I see.

Ha, ain't that the God's honest truth! Unfortunately, she is the one who opened the credit card bill first. Oops.

Thanks to everyone for your insight. I've replied to a couple of your PMs. I'm starting to get pretty pumped up for the hunt. I just need to get within 30 yards of a cow and let the old recurve fly.

I'm fixin' to leave for Willard Peak in about an hour.

If I see any on the way up or while hiking over to Ben Lomond peak, I'll get back with ya.

I am mostly familiar with the Willard Peak part of the unit because I live nearby. One advantage of that area is that it is all public land, whereas a lot of the unit is private.

Over the years, my son has had a lot of very close encounters with moose while hunting the late archery deer hunt in Willard Basin. He didn't like it much when they would jump out in spitting distance from him. He usually found them while wallowing around in thick brush.

I drew a cow tag on that unit a few years ago, before the moose population crash. Me, my son and one of his friends went up to the Willard Peak area on opening day, mostly to size things up. I didn't really want to shoot one that early in the season because of the heat. We saw a few bulls and some cows, with all the cows too far away from the road to be interesting, so we headed for home early.

Just before we got back down to Perry Reservoir, we spotted a cow about 90 yards off the road. I didn't want to shoot it, because it was BELOW the road. The boys insisted, so I neck shot her, and then the work began.

We couldn't budge it in one piece, so we cut it in half, and I went home (less than 10 miles away) and got a big long rope and pulley. We hooked the pulley to a tree and used the rope attached to the truck to pull it up the hill. It worked pretty well.

Since then, the population has crashed and it is just starting to recover. Unless you have a lot of time to waste, I wouldn't recommend the bow, or at least take a rifle along too because it would take a lot of time or luck to get in bow range of a moose now.

Really? I walked right up on this bull and several cows he was with right after my dad shot his... they aren't too spooky at all. Every moose I've ever encountered in Utah I walked right up on. The bull I killed awhile ago let me drive my ATV 40 yards from him before I shot him with my bow. I've never had a hard time getting close to moose in Utah. Wyoming is a different story...

Plenty of moose in the unit. If you're a bow hunter, you'll be fine

The road is still closed at the Willard Basin info brown Sign (Opens July 15th like most years) so I hiked out to Grizzly Peak.

Glassed down into the Perry Pond/lake area and saw 4 cows, 2 calves and a Bullwinkle bull.

A couple Billies out below Grizzly Peak and a few deer (does/fawns)

You should be able to harvest in that area.

Bugleb, deerkiller, and pleasedear. Thank you guys so much for the responses, it is very much appreciated, that definitely gets me excited for the hunt. If you guys ever need help around Elko for anything just holler would love to return the favor. I'll definitely keep you guys posted on how it goes on the hunt. Thank you so much!!!

I started this thread a year ago, so I may as well share the outcome of the hunt. I ended up killing this big old cow on opening day. Glassed her and a boyfriend up from across two canyons and made a death march on them. Whacked her on the run with the .270 WSM after the wind switched on me as I was making my final stalk into the little grove of trees they were bedded in. Then the real work began. I was fortunate that two other MM members happened to live nearby and had side by sides and were able to drive an established trail to within 100 yards of where she laid. Talk about some great guys! Utah people are the best people, hands down. Would have been a pretty rough couple days packing her all the way back to the truck solo. I did that once before with a bull moose in WY, so to get this lucky was truly a blessing.

My only regret is that I brought my rifle in the first place. I should have only carried my recurve. I second guessed myself that I'd be able to get it done as a non-resident who only had a few days to hunt, which was foolish.

Again, thanks to all you guys that helped me out on my hunt. I'll likely never draw this tag again, so it is truly appreciated. If any of you ever need some advice for an AZ Coues deer hunt, hit me up.

Now I just need to figure out where I'm going to fill the two doe antelope tags I drew this year :). A buddy and I pulled the San Rafael Mounds Reef doe tags for the season starting August 1st. I'm not really concerned about it. That one should be a slam dunk as well. I just wish that I could draw a buck or bull tag in Utah sometime, but that's the breaks. I'll keep enjoying the ladies for now...

Hoof_hearted, congratulations on your successful hunt. And thank you for telling us about how it all went down. Nothing better than a freezer full of Moose meat. I hope I have the same luck this year, Utah has treated me with some awesome tags and animals, and I have came away with some really good friendships from my hunts over that way. Thank you again for sharing!!!

Hoof - sent you a PM

That is awesome! Glad to hear you had some good help offered!. I put in for cow moose for the first time this year and am excited to draw someday. I have never tried moose, but eat almost exclusively elk as a protein source. I have heard moose is even better! Can't wait to get my successful email someday!
