San Juan summer bear

So I have been applying for the roadless Book Cliffs. I have scouted it a couple of times and I've seen a really good bear in there during one scouting trip. However, I am still 4 to 5 years away from being guaranteed to draw the tag. I can draw San Juan summer Bear Tag right now and then 4 or 5 years draw the roadless Book Cliffs with archery equipment. My family has some history down there so it would also be interesting to see the area. I have bear Hunted a handful of times and have shot a good bear in Idaho. I always hunt spot and stalk. Those of you guys that know the unit, what do you think about my chances of getting a bear on this hunt spot and stalk? I could probably spend a solid seven to nine days hunting on the unit. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Success rates on the spot and stalk are not good, the dwr has it on the there site, I think the success was 2 out of 50 tags. So you would have about a 4% chance of killing a bear.

Those odds are for the October season. I would have the summer season which allows bait but I live too far away to bait. I was hoping you have a better chance of seeing them in June than October. Have you ever hunted the unit?

yes, you said spot and stalk, so I was assuming the October tag. I have done the bait the last 2 years. Never tried looking for them during that time, but usually the hounds have them ran all over the country before the bait season starts. I would bet its just as hard to locate one on a spot and stalk because of that. But if you say you have 7 - 9 days, you can easily bait one in during that time frame. Bears will usually hit a bait station within a few days.

If you draw a bait tag, definitely do whatever you can to get down a couple times and set up bait stations, it's fun as heck! Plus, you'll have the opportunity to look over multiple bears and hopefully get the one you're looking for.

I've never hunted that unit, but typical advice is to set it not far from water, in the bottom of a large draw with some finger canyons so the scent can float up and out to cover as much ground as possible. And buy as much Anise oil as you can afford!

If you want a phase color bear, look into wa amd ore spring bear hunts. It surely wouldnt take 5 or 6 more years of applying.

Bit of a drive, but you would have a bear in no time.
