Utah State Senator Niederhauser sponsored SB71 and it passed the committee unanimously yesterday.

I'm in my 40?s and grew up at the base of big cottonwood Canyon. I love the cottonwoods, Shot my first deer with my bow at 16 on a solo hunt back in 1990. I've hunted the Wasatch for 27 years.

I've skied every inch of resorts, spent thousands of dollars in local tourism. I pay hundreds of dollars yearly in gas taxes running a landscaping business. I take my kids hiking, skiing, fishing, and just weekend picnics up those canyons.

Now the state legislature is trying to tax me and all you each time you drive your vehicle up the canyon. They cry about the air, brainwash us to buy electric cars, car pool, use public transportation. Then they say ?we have a 600 million deficit in the gas tax? they blame that on electric cars?, car pooling, public transportation.

S. Niederhauser says he can't get out of his subdivisions because you all are congesting Wasatch Boulevard. S Mayne said skiers (hunter, mountain bikers, hikers, fisherman, campers, picniers) will be able to pay the tax because they can afford a ski pass (hunting license, a mountain bike, a backpack, a fishing poll, a tent, and basket of food). You are rich=you should pay more tax.

If we as recreationalist of the awesome cottonwood canyons let our stupid legislators modify an existing toll law to make it easy to collect there tax on any roads let alone the entrance to our canyons, then we loose our freedom and rights to access our lands.

They say our gas tax isn't paying for roads, that we are 600 million short. Where is the DMV registration money going?

All this congestion Niederhauser speaks about in the cottonwoods is in a short time frame on the weekend mornings, and on a snow day. He makes it sound like it is all year long and everyday.

He also is forcing you to car pool or use a bus. Maybe a ski group can do that but try finding a bus at 4:00 am in the morning to go hunt. And then what public transportation would allow you to load your dead animal on there to pack it down to the parking garage.

Call your rep and tell them not to vote for SB 71

Sounds to me like he has special interest in this. Maybe they should just put a stop light at his subdivision and be done. It's too bad.

We continue to allow our govt to restrict us and manipulate our public lands to keep people off them for the benefit of a few. It's sad.

Done. And I have never been up cottonwood canyon.

Gotta love "conservative small government Utah", where there's never a fee that can't be added.

Here's a thought, stick an 11% tax on ski passes. Kinda like the Pittman Robertson tax we pay to fund our hobby.

There has been a Fee Booth up Millcreek for years.

I don't mind 'chipping in $' to have the canyon open year round.

Up American Fork too and it hasn't stopped anyone from going hunting at 4:00am.
