I have max points for general deer and I am looking at this hunt. What size buck can one expect for this hunt?

A 4x4 should be easiy doable with minimal scouting. I have seen some decent bug bucks but you will have to search a lot of get lucky. Only elk hunted there never deer because if the points needed.

It was good, it's been hammered in recent years. I've been building points to hunt it. Family has killed some really good bucks the past 5 years. That being said, myself and brother who lives on the unit have moved to different units. There is not many deer total on the unit and the quality has slipped too much to burn points on.

People were using this unit as a loophole to draw other units with their second choice before Utah started taking your Preference Points no matter which choice you used.

The PP required to draw do not truly reflect a "trophy general season unit".

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-18 AT 05:46AM (MST)[p]The first year it went from LE to General, I applied with my Max Ressy points and I did bow season but Didn't draw.

Explanation was that the Lifetime License holders went for it and I think 1 person drew that wasn't a Lifetime License holder that year.

I have done only Pref Point code since and got a Leftover bow tag in a different unit most every year.

When it first switched back to a general unit I believe the number of tags was 200. The unit produced some great bucks for a few years. The DWR then looked at the buck doe ratio (not the overall number of deer on the unit) and jumped the tags to 400. They also increased the number so landowner tags issued. The unit is now a shell of what it had been. More opportunity to have a tag in you're pocket but less opportunity to actually find a mature buck. The perfect Utah General Unit! :)

Ok now I am a little confused here. Is Don asking about Plateau Fish lake or Plateau Thousand Lakes ? Because I was thinking he was talking about the Fish lake unit.

Yeah, what are max points? My brother has 10 general season points. I know, dumb. But he doesnt like to hunt anymore that much. We keep buying points for that day when DWR combines LE and Gen into 1 group. Because in actuality, all the hunts are LE. So why not?

Thousand Lakes once had only 25 rifle permits for the whole unit when it was LE. When it went to one of the general units 400 OIL and Dedicated went for it, so magically the biologist determined that the correct number of tags for the unit was 401! How lucky! After shooting out most of the good bucks most folks realized that it is not the second coming of the Henries and now about 200 of those folks take that tag and surprisingly the biology suggests that 200 is just the right number!
The truth is that it is a decent unit with probably less good bucks than most other general units. It is tough to hunt, extremely thick and the buck numbers are way off. They also have a big coyote problem on that unit along with a good cougar population. I saw three this summer on the unit and a bunch of yotes. It is thick enough that a few good ones will always survive but they are tough to find and tougher to hunt.

What would make someone wait so long to hunt a Utah general tag? 15 years? Are the better general tags THAT much better? Just curious...
