LAST EDITED ON Mar-03-18 AT 11:32AM (MST)[p]I will most likely draw a San Juan Bear Tag. I was going to take the whole family for a couple days on spring break just to get to know the area. I'm wondering if that time of year I will be able to get up in the pines and camp in the grass. Should I plan on staying down in some of the lower country? Any advice on camping spots would be much appreciated, thanks!

PS. We are looking to avoid campgrounds would rather just stay out on BLM, State, or National Forest.

Also, I will be driving a minivan since I have the whole family. So I won't be able to get off on any roads that are too rough, thanks again for any advice.

You should be able to get your van up through the ears on South Elk Ridge. Once on top there are quite a few spot to camp in the pines. I haven't been up there recently but with as mild of a winter as we've had I can't imagine there being too much snow to deal with. I had the spring bear tag last year and had a blast.

If you do camp up by the bears ears.....check the weather first. You WON'T want to be up there in a mini van if it rains. That road gets pretty nasty. Not sure where you're planning on hunting, but if you head toward the causeway north out of Blanding ... there's plenty of pines down low and that road is well graveled. Good luck on your hunt.
