More Wasatch Front Archery Only???

What do you all think, should more of the Wasatch Front go to archery only?

I think I might like to see the area from Parley?s Canyon to Weber Canyon or Ogden Canyon go to archery only.

I'd like to see more area that is archery only just to spread out some of the heavy pressure in the current archery only area. Plus I like hunting where older age class bucks live.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-24-18 AT 05:14PM (MST)[p]I wish they would take it all the way down to nephi for the extended hunt. Or further. It would spread hunters out and kill deer that otherwise would never get shot at by a human. Even if some of the sections were antlerless only, it would give a lot more opportunity.

I'll second the request to expand it south. If it was expanded down to Provo canyon, I could walk out my back door and be hunting in 5-10 minutes!

And break It up into separate Wasatch Front Units with each having it's own separate draw to hunt.

No more every archery deer tag being able to hunt it.

I am a bowhunter. I favor longer seasons, expanded areas.

But what I can't get on board with is, the removal of rifle and muzzleloader seasons.

I'll never support shortening somebody else?s seasons and areas. The reason for the current archery only is due to the massive amount of hikers on the main portion of the front.

Taking away seasons and areas Is a very slippery slope that I can't support.

Make it it's own unit you'd have to draw to hunt it that?d keep pressure off rutting deer and less crowds.
That's my honest opinion

Archery hunters wanting more while taking away from other hunters that don't do it their way? That's weird...that never happens.

I'm on board with that Elk. Maybe if all us muzzle guys band together and pound the table, we'll get four months to hunt too?

Yeah that"s a good idea. Turn loose a bunch of rifle toting Utards up the cottonwoods and I am sure things would go really well!!
Liberal Salt Lake county politicians would have the Front closed down to all hunting within a year or two.

That would be awesome, and I believe their would be a lot more big bucks around. That being said they are going to give out 9,000 deer tags in 4/5/6 this year. Most of those hunters will be hunting in the area from parleys to Weber canyon because the vast majority of the unit is private. Those canyons are deep and nasty, but everyone is packing a long range setup these days and a lot of those better deer have no chance, of course a couple slip through the cracks, but fewer and fewer are making it to maturity. It is depressing seeing how the division manages this unit and how the quality has tanked by them doing so and combining these units into one. That has never made any sense.

I'd just love to see more big bucks and the only way that is possible is for more bucks to grow older. It's just too easy to kill them with a rifle. Real hard for bucks to slip through the cracks when there's 25 dudes in every crack with a rifle that can drop them at 600 yards.
I don't care how it's done, but I'd like to see lower success rates and more older bucks. Archery only appears to work.
Old bucks are far better jerky than baby deer.

I am all for bigger bucks. Maybe not let everybody from every single unit hunt the extended. There needs to be some pressure taken off somewhere

I've hunted the extended areas for almost as many years as they've been open to archery only and they are completely different places now compared to years past. There was a time when they were not crowded and the hunting was as good as it gets in my book. It's still good, but has become VERY competitive on the front.
Fact is people are hunting harder and longer. It seems people are more hard core than they used to be. Not to mention the affect that social media has had on hunting.
I'm 100% in favor of archery only units, be it for deer or elk. It's a very effective way to allow larger amounts of hunters to hunt and still allow animals to grow to an older age.
It drives me crazy to hear people say archers have it all and we don't need any more perks. If it's so unfair and lopsided why don't they pick up a bow and reap
the ?benefits?? I dare say archers have lost more in this state than any other weapon type.

I like it Doncrete, I'd be quite alright with that idea. I learned to hunt with an open sight 30-30 and it didn't hurt me a bit. In fact 35 years later I still prefer open sights.

Why only the Wasatch
How about above all the other towns that have Mountains around them.
All those guys don't want to drive either.

The purpose of archery only areas is not a "ME ME ME" reason. This way of thinking is tiring.

Archery only areas have very intentional reasons behind them. If people are not willing to see past the "ME ME ME" attitude, they will never get the ideas behind such areas.

I suppose one could say I'm selfish for wanting to hunt more often and for better quality game. I'll take that.

The better we get at killing, the less opportunity we're going to have as success rates increase.

Lower success rates equal more opportunity. Either that or more game, but that's not happening. We have what we have and need to make do with it.

I'd rather archery hunt every year for quality bucks than hunt every few years with a rifle for baby bucks. That's all.

It's not an archery thing. I support more hunts that have lower success rates, regardless whether it's an old open sight 30-30 or open sight muzzleloader or a bow.

Don?t get me wrong, I like success too and a rifle sure helps with that. But hunting better quality bucks is a lot of fun.
