Looking for input from those who have specific experience here and am asking as a son looking for a way to give back and say thanks to a the man who taught me how to hunt. My dad drew a CWMU deer tag for Deseret. With the state hunters there is a "guided option" and I'm wondering if it is worth it. I don't ask this from the perspective of will it get him on "bigger" deer than others but rather, will it add to his overall experience. Does the guided option really offer the experience of a truly guided hunt or is it just a waste of money? He has never been on a guided hunt. He is in his 70's and cashed in a large number of points on this tag. I think he felt like he needed to do this now so he could enjoy a an opportunity like this while still in reasonably good health. Considering his age, this is truly a once in a lifetime hunt for him. If the guided option has value and really adds to the experience I would like to know. Otherwise, we'll go camp, hunt, and have a great time regardless.

I have zero experience on Deseret or with the guides, although I've heard it's a pretty good operation, but that's a pretty classy move on your part (if you can swing it) to hire the guide, give your dad an awesome experience that I'm sure he's earned and make memories.

LAST EDITED ON May-15-18 AT 02:45PM (MST)[p]I know personally the operator and some of the guides for Deseret and can say the guided option is a true guided hunt. They will house you in the ranch cabins with meals prepared every day. You will have a guide with you every step of the way during each day of the hunt. They know where the deer are and can be very accommodating to your dad given his age and physical capabilities. They will be sure to give him every opportunity for a good, mature buck. Now you can have a good time doing the non-guided option as the ranch holds good deer throughout but given the circumstances I wouldn't want to chance your dad not having a good opportunity at a quality buck. They run one of the best CWMU operations in the state and I don't think you would regret one bit doing the guided option. IMHO I wouldn't hesitate going that route given his age and it being a once in a lifetime hunt.

What jcoop7 said.

I realize it's really easy to spend someone else's money, so I don't want to flippantly give that advice. But if you have the ability to do the guided option up there, I would. Not everyone can swing that, however.

Regularjoe, I kid you not I am in the exact same position with my old man. He also burned a lot of points to get his tag for Deseret for this fall. I appreciate you asking the question about the guides, as I was wondering the same thing. I also appreciate everyone's answers.

Good luck this fall. I did some research up there when I was in college and can say for sure that DLL is a pretty awesome place. You will see great bucks regardless of which option you choose.

I was on that ranch last year and I don't believe, you need a guide. I saw plenty of deer that were trophy quality. There are some great bucks on the ranch send me a pm and I can tell you more and we can set up a time for a,phone call glad to help in any way

We have hunted the cow elk and antelope on there. Seen some great bucks. We have done the guided option on the cow elk hunts (3 times) and they are worth ever penny. They know where the animals are and the quality of the animals plus they get it out once it is down. They are great folks so you would not go wrong doing the guided option plus more likely get a higher quality animal. You say give back to your dad should answer it. Lucky on a great tag. Post pictures and story.
