Nebo fire

Anyone that drew a LE bull tag this year with a bunch of points might wanna consider turning it back in. Between the 2 giant fires that have blown up over night, a lot of the popular great places to rifle hunt are burned or are in the process of it. Lots of main and access roads are closed too. Planes, helicopters and trucks making noise all over the place. There still some areas that are great that haven't and won't be effected by this, but if you haven't done a bunch of previous scouting or aren't very familiar with the area, it might make for a pretty difficult hunt between accessing areas and finding elk that have been pushed from their normal spots. Fires continue to grow in size by the hour

Thanks for the update!
The outcome is uncertain,
It's a bad deal and the fire will impact way more than just LE elk hunters but impact them it certainly will.

So what happens now? Two days from early rifle season, relatively small unit with fairly limited access points which I'm sure are pretty much all shut down with these two fires. Should the DWR somehow address this, like the bison fiasco last year? I'm sure if they did, there would be some feelers hurt, can't make everyone happy. I'm with DK on this one, With what it looks right now and the windy dry forecast, I'd be turning my tag in for sure.

The amount of smoke coming off that mountain is just insane. I don't know how you can even hunt it. The SW side of the Wasatch will likely have very little visibility for the time being as well with the smoke blowing straight that way currently.

One change in wind direction could take care of that, but the smoke is just incredible.

My cousin in Springville sent me pics last night, that thing is scary hot.

I'd turn mine in. In fact id be considering turning in a spike or muzzy tag too. Every hunters bad dream, a fire that close to the opener.

I would defiantly still hunt it. There are still some good areas that have not been burnt by the fires. I grew up on those mountains and the fires are burning some very good areas especially for the rifle tag. But..... I think I would be very picky then if I didn't kill one I would go cry to the DWR just like the buffalo hunters did and hope for the best.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-14-18 AT 08:08AM (MST)[p]Spike only tags are not for specific units, they are for all spike only units. And there are no points, so there is no benefit to turning in a spike only tag.

I'm generally not a fan of the idea of turning in a tag just because the hunt is going to be harder than one thought, but I'd be strongly considering turning in my LE early rifle tag if I had one. The fire does not cover the entire unit, but many of the access roads are currently cut off and you can't see squat up there, I'm sure.

Good luck to anyone hunting. And good luck to home/cabin owners in the area. Be safe out there folks!

I'm not sure but what I understand from news reports is all access roads are shut down? I know if I drew a non-bonus random Nebo tag, I'd be crying my eyes out right about now, because I'll bet the early rifle and maybe even the muzz is fubar.

Your correct. Easnt thinking when I said spike.

Years ago we were headed for the Uintas when the boy scouts decided to start a fire. Some of our group went, we decided to hold back. They spent the next week moving camp daily. The fs kept them well away, is imagine they would here too.

Rumor is they shut down from thistle to Fairview too?

Shitty deal. As much beetle kill is there is in our forests its almost a miracle the whole state isn't burning

I have a couple daughters and their families who live in the general Nebo area and their natural gas service has been shut down. Unless things really improve quickly (not likely) it will be over a week before they have natural gas service again.

Those folks even more impacted than my daughters probably couldn't care less if a few folks are turning their tags back or not.

With that said, I feel bad for those who actually drew the tag with few points. They really have no option but to hunt since they likely won't draw again very soon.

Prayers to all those really impacted by this disaster!

All public access and use of forest service lands has been shut down on most of the Nebo unit as of yesterday afternoon. No way that will be lifted within the next week, especially if they have to go through and cut out trails and roads from fallen trees and debris

The UDWR called tag holders on Friday and told them to turn in their tags before 5pm. Some tag holders think they will get to hunt a different hunt or next year. That all remains to be seen.

I wish my son or daughter would get a call for a turned in tag (they won't reissue). Not all the unit burned, but it is a real mess.

I saw this pic from a guy in Payson on Social Media yesterday. I thought I would share. Pretty sad deal.

My wife drew the non res late tag and if the d.w.r. gives all the muzzy and early rifle tag holders late tags I'm gonna raise hell!

Not calling anyone a "tall-tale-teller", since we all know social media is the source of all truth, but why would that bull be burned to a crisp and yet there's not even as much as a soot mark on the antlers?

Those poor folks who have lost trophies in a house fire will attest that antlers do in fact burn along with the rest of the animal.

The pic of that bull was posted long before the Nebo fire started. Not from that fire. #fakenews

If we could just get all these bad a firefighters out of here that ?don't make money putting out fires only make money fighting fires? or starting fires maybe there will be a few trees left in Payson canyon

That's a crappy statement to make and devalues all of the hard work that the folks fighting fires are out there doing right now. Its an insensitive and dumb comment to make. We are having record fire seasons and people are working there tales off while you sit at a keyboard and make a statement the implies "all firefighters are lazy arsonists"

If you can do better than get off the couch, get a job as a firefighter and get your ass to work.

The bad guys here aren't the fire fighters. They are doin all they possibly can. That country is some of the hardest places I can imagine to try and fight a fire. Be mad at the forest circus! They allowed this fire to get so far out of control. They are about as useless as a white crayon when it comes to managing our public lands. I've lost all respect for anyone in the FS, aside from the fire fighters. Those guys are the real heroes.

It's really hard to believe their statements of trying their best to protect our public forest and habitat, when they don't do it themselves

"There?s always a fire burning somewhere up there this time of year. They usually only consist of one tree or small group of trees and never really go anywhere. They just burn out on there own. Nothing to worry about with this one"

Hey deerkiller what happened to you knowing everything about the nebo and fires up there? Is there still nothing to worry about when 75% of the unit is gone?

If you wanna get technical about it, it was the pole creek fire that destroyed the large majority of the unit and got so far out of hand. There is always a fire up on baldy every year. Has been for atleast the last 20 years since I started hunting there. This is the first one to get out of control. I was apparently wrong. First time for everything i suppose...

Good luck with your late season tag. You?ll need it haha
