Multi Season Elk Thoughts

In your opinion, how did the multi season elk hunt go over this year? I'm hearing a ton of complaints that there are now triple the hunters for each season in the field. I know guys that couldn't even find a camp spot on the archery hunt. The rifle hunt seems to be bad as well. I'm sure the muzzy hunt will be the same.

It appears the guys that used to have to pick a season are now hunting all seasons and it has turned into a huge circus of people hunting the any bull units. I kinda thought this would happen.

What are your thoughts / Experiences?

Multi season tags are a very small percentage of the tags. Personally I don't have any issues with it??

Wapitiwilly, do you remember how many total multi season permits were available? I know they sold out.

There's Gonna Be Some Spendy Elk Track Soup This Year!:D

I've Talked to a Few People that Went up on Mosby!

They All said the Same Thing:

They Said if You Wanna See a Real CLUSTER-#### that'd be the Place to be!

The One hunter Said He Shot a Bull & 2 other Guys Ground Pounded it!

Almost a Fist Fight over a PISSCUTTER Bull I guess!

That Sshhhitt Ain't for me!

I'll Keep Huntin where their isn't any Elk or Asssholes!

They make allot of money but they got sad faces

My biggest complaint is these guys are leaving their camps on the mountain for 2 months and the forest service does nothing about it.

There were just under 5200 multi season tags sold.
I didn't experience any additional pressure on the bow hunt but the rifle hunt sure seemed crowded to me.

We didnt experience any increase in hunters in our areas on the any bull rifle opener. Didnt even see another hunter out there! But the elk numbers seem to be way down this year... or they have all gone elsewhere.... pretty quiet out there this year!!

As far as i understand it All multi season tags were taken from the any weapon tag quotas so there are the same amount of rifle hunters out there but more people on the archery and muzzleloader hunts. I'm definitely not a fan of it. Seemed like there were a lot more people out there during the archery hunt.

I didn't bother getting one because I knew I'd get one with my bow and it would just be a waste of an extra $100 :)

So that means the UT DWR made an additional $520,000 on those 5200 multi season tags. You think this was all about money?

I find it comical that the Wildlife board votes to allow multi season tags knowing that more spikes will be killed and then at the last WB meeting the chairman wants to get rid of the spike hunts because we are killing too many spikes. Seriously, I don't think the WB has 10 firing brain cells between all of them.

Should be a hell of a Christmas party this year!

Ya, I'm sure that's where it will go. They need to spend it on some Elementary math lessons for the Wildlife Board.

Crazy thought they will sell you a tag for 3 seasons, but the archery hunt still ends in early Sept. Makes ZERO sense.

I'm sure the cold wet weather doesn't have anything to do with the less pressure.

Congrats on your bulls.

You're right, it probably doesn't have anything to do with it. I've been up there on years that are a lot worse weather, and there is more pressure.

There are 15,000 any bull tags available for muzz, rifle, or multi-season. The potential is there for all 15,000 to be sold as multi season tags, or all 15,000 to be sold as muz tags, or all 15,000 tags to be sold as rifle tags. You request your weapon choice at the counter, and when the 15,000 tag limit is hit (regardless of how many were sold as multi-season, or how many sold as rifle, or how many sold as muzz), then they are sold out So, the potential is there for all 15,000 tags to be sold as multi season tags. I don' know the exact number of multi-season tags sold, but I have heard from several DWR employees that over half of the 15,000 were sold as multi-season.

Archery only tags are unlimited and are not included in the 15,000.

Everyone I have talked to said that there were a lot more people on the Archery, and I have heard mixed results on the rifle so far. I am betting that the muzz hunt will likely see the most increase of hunting pressure. We shall see. I am not a fan of the multi-season tag.

In the areas that I typically archery hunt, it tripled number of archery hunters. I saw this on a general bull unit and a spike unit.

I am not sure if that was the norm but it was very disappointing season.

Not sure where you got your info from, but all the 15,000 any bull elk tags can be sold as multi-season. It is not limited to just a few. 15,000 is the limit.

When they proposed this hunt I was hoping my multi tag would count as 3 hunters. That would reduce pressure.

I haven't really seen any difference. You seem to have those people that drive the roads looking to get lucky. Then you have those that get away from the roads and the people like the elk.

The number of archery elk hunters in my unit tripled. Last year back in 2 miles I was all alone, this year I had guys walking all over me.

We have 2 tags. Hunt the north slope. Archery and rifle combined I have seen a grand total of 1 dude in the forest. That 1 dude. Archery is during camping season so its hard to judge. Rifle camping was crowded, but I think the Murdoch fire might have pushed some dudes in. Seemed like same folks in same spots as always.

Did I mention that in 3 weeks of elk hunting we saw 1 dude in the trees?

The n slope is a biatch to hunt. The weather was "normal", snowing sideways and 20 degrees. Seems like the deadfall increased a ton.

Saw 4 other elk hanging not including my boys bull.

Oh ya, and 1 dude so far.

I'm glad dudes spent $150 to come camping, enjoy the mtn, hang with the fellas for a weekend. They didn't hurt me, and didn't hurt the elk much.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-18 AT 05:09AM (MST)[p] I went with the 3 season tag . I usually Archery hunt. The amount of people on the bow hunt, in our area I'd say more than doubled . Even in canyons miles from the roads. I think water was a huge issue, also the fires moved folks from usual areas. We still saw the "normal" amount of animals. I never connected with my bow. On the rifle hunt, in the same area,. It was deserted. We saw very few hunters. Weather was crappy and might have scared folks away, didnt connect on the opening 3 days. Then Hunted near home for a couple days and did finally see a spike, Elk chili for Sunday dinner last night was really good.lol. Im glad I had the 3 season tag, after all I like that chili.

Edit: d@mn hard for my fat fingers to post from my phone
