Henry Mtn Bison help

DWR is adding a hunt in January (15th to 21st) for the Henry Mtns due to drought and decline of feed. I just got home from a week vacation and when checking my emails found that DWR is offering me a permit because I was on the alternate list. I have till 5pm this Monday to decide.

How is accessing the area during this time? Is there anyone local with horses to hire to pack out a bison? If I accept the tag it will be me and one friend helping. Will the bison be scattered or herded up at this time?

I have a lot of questions running through my head right now. I would appreciate talking to anyone who has experience hunting bison in this area, or anyone who scouts the Henry?s and has seen bison.

Thanks
Bill

I drew the tag and hunted it successfully in '01 I believe. My wife drew it and wasn't successful but had opportunity. My daughter was offered this same tag 2 weeks ago and we turned it down. Mostly because of her school schedule. It will be brutally cold and sounds like they are offering lots of tags. Without luck or previous experience there it can be a brutal hunt.

Good luck if you take the tag. There probably won't be much of a herd left for the next few years, once these emergency hunts take place.

I have hunted the henrys for buffalo with family in the past. I had a buddy get offered the tag and asked me if he should take the tag. I told him if he took it I would come with him but referred him to some 4 guides down there. They told him that they would be glad to take his money and guide him but this year would probably be the worst success rate they have had in a while because of all the added tags and unpredictability of the weather there. After talking to the guides he decided not to take the tag. Its going to be hard with all the pressure for sure. Get horses and come up Swap Mesa you will have less pressure there than Cave flats. If you have some extra guys put them on glassing points out on Tarantula and have some good radios so they can tell you where they are at. Or you may get lucky and find some random little herd right off the road at the horn.... I have seen that many years too. Good luck and stay warm.

Hey bud Big John has a lot of experience in this hunt I think he has had the tag a couple of times. PM him I think he can help you out.

I have a cow bison tag for Jan 1st to Jan 7th and I'm willing to share any info with you if you're willing to do the same, plus any info after my hunt.

I was there over the weekend and spotted a herd of about 30 animals. By January they could be a long ways away from where they were, but Slam gave the best advise. Surprisingly enough, they dont stick out as well as you might think.

I've guided and hunted the Henry bison for over 10 years now, BigJohn and his dad hunted with me the last 2 years when they drew tags. people can suggest all of this and its all great suggestions but just remember the hunt is in January. Lundellhunting7 suggest going out swap because more pressure will be on cave, OK this early hunt the road was so washed out you couldn't pull your horse trailer to get into cave flat so those people went to swap. where are those folks going to go if you cant make it into cave because of snow? people are suggesting to get up high and put the glass to work, thats great but if you cant get up top to glass the mesas then your stuck. like i said its all great advise and a normal year that's good but what if we actually have a winter this year.

This is what i have been telling people and i have talked to 12 or so of the January tag holders now both cow and hunters choice. some of them had already made their mind up to keep the tag and wanted to hire me and others were not sure and wanted my advise. I will not be hunting in January as we will be having a baby around the 18th so I'm not really looking for a divorce.

Take the tag unless you are guaranteed the tag you want next year, if you are then don't take it and hold out.

if you are not guaranteed the tag then take the tag and let it play out. If it comes January 13th and you are snowed off the mountain access is horrible then turn the tag back lose your money but you get your points back and life goes on.

if you are going to take the tag i would make arrangements to have horses and snowmobiles available for whatever is thrown at you. if you get up on swap and everything has been pushed back up onto the mountain that you are snowed off of then at least you might be able to get to them with a snow mobile.

its hunting nothing is a guarantee and if you would like to talk more about it you can give me a call since i wont be guiding anyone i would be more than happy to give you my honest opinion and any advice that might help 435-979-7227.

Taylor knows the Henry?s. I have learned a lot from him about the Henry?s. But he is the Bison master. I have already talked to him about the hunts this year. He said it's going to be tough. Congrats on the new baby. It's just not good for all of you hunters that could use his help. He is the buffalo man !! I mean really have you seen his picture. He even looks like a big old buffalo. http://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos_2018/1975959a1567ff9ac45798a0dbfa8c87f6d1a.jpeg I would have just referred you guys to Taylor. But what I have learned about the Henry?s. It's no cake walk. Ever so often you hear of a guy getting lucky and running into a bull on accident. But if your not willing to go Into no mans land. The roadless area by hiking or riding a horse. You may not see a Bison. Good luck

Thanks everyone. Like I said I got home Friday evening and had to purchase the permit by 5pm yesterday if I wanted it. I did not realize Monday was a holiday until I tried to call DWR. Since I was not able to talk to the DWR rep about the hunt I decided not to get the tag and save my 20 points. Wish I had a week or two to plan things out, but that was not in the cards. I hope there is a good herd in the future because, I would really like to get a nice bull one of these days.
Thanks again everyone
Bill
