Southwest desert cow elk.

Longtime lurker first time poster. I drew out for a cow tag this year and finally got to do some hunting yesterday. After covering alot of ground from sunup to sundown it was rather discouraging. I can't say I saw any fresh sign of elk, anywhere. My dad drew the same tag last year and we were able to find some at the base of Indian Peak, even saw a decent bull. Last year there was no snow, this year is a bit different and I am at a bit of a loss where to find the elk. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Nevada! Find when the Nevada hunts start and wait for them to run them back over the state line. But they do get scattered and pushed everywhere. You can even find down on the desert. Some of those areas aren't as flat as they look. You just need to keep covering ground until you turn them up. They have been hammered out there for months. They get pretty skiddis at the sound of a truck or Atv.

Sounds like the goal of wiping out the SW desert elk herd is progressing as planned.

The cattlemen in the area must be giddy with joy.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-09-18 AT 08:34PM (MST)[p]I think the elk are the least of their problems.. The horses must outnumber the elk.

Maybe we need to talk to the Division and get a harvest agenda on horses. Then they can start issuing tags on a stallion to mare ratio. It has seemed to work with our other wildlife.

LOL!

True Though!

I'll bet the Truth be known We've all ate a Horse Steak or two in Cafe's!

I know so many people in so many places
They make allot of money but they got sad faces

It Ain't Easy being Me!:D:D:D

If the zebra I ate in Africa tastes anything like horse, I'd be the first one to line up for a tag or 50. Best meat I've ever had.

Four of my kids drew cow tags for the North area of Southwest desert. Their hunt starts just over a week from now. It can be difficult to locate them. I drew it two years ago and got lucky. I shot a cow within 15 minutes of entering the unit.

I can't see the horses tasting bad, I mean they eat the same stuff. Most people wont eat jackrabbit but it really isn't that bad. Plus you get twice the meat for your trouble. :p

I think the plan this weekend is to try the more northern part of the unit and maybe closer to the state line.
