I don't understand Utah's stance on shed hunting. If your out and about February 1 looking for antler you need take the course. It goes on and on about winter stress and mortality rates.
Go figure it's okay and perfectly legal to chase elk and deer with high caliber rifles January 31st, yet magically at midnight it becomes stressful and causes winter mortality... Think it'd be better to leave them alone before winter sets in and not hunt them non stop.

It's just another way to write tickets and take your horns.Im with ya it's one of dumbest thing ever, chase them all over the mountain for months and everything changes in one day.

Utard logic....

GOODWIN: Dems really do love Republicans -- when they're dead...

Sometimes they Extend Cow Hunts in to February!

The number of "hunters" out in the field this time of year is miniscule in comparison to Utah's masses of shed hunters.
But you do make a valid point.

Also, I have seen first hand, idiots out driving ATV?s all over the mountain side and chasing animals all over the damn place. It's ridiculous. I think this is what pushed the law here. It's unfortunate, but the animals do need a break. A few uncaring people always ruin it for everyone else.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-01-19 AT 11:34AM (MST)[p]It is a truly ironic method of management. Two years ago I watched groups of elk get pushed all over the place by groups of cow hunters in mid January on Tabby mountain. They were pushing deep snow and every cow, calf and bull had their mouths hanging open and sucking air. I also used to see large herds of cows around the foothills, now I see small scattered groups clinging to wisps of melted ground in the most steep and nasty faces they can get to. Id say December is by far the very latest any hunt for wintering big game should go if managers don't want to appear hypocritical in implementing shed restrictions.

Probably an unpopular opinion but
All big game hunts should end by December 15th
Shed hunting season should be closed from January 1st until May 1st.
Give em a break for 4 months

Couldn't agree more. Give the poor things a break.

Better keep shooting those pesky predators that are chasing our prized mule deer. Its disheartening to see those yotes running on top of the snow with such ease.
