NR points and do they matter.

Here is a question for the Utah in the know types. I understand the point system for Ut but since many of the OIL hunts and a very large portion of the le bull, deer hunts only allocate 1 tag and this is in the random draw for nr, is this a true random draw like NM or closer to AZ where each point gets your name in the hat again. Was not sure of the answer so thought someone would. Thanks and good luck in the draws this year.

Correct. Lowest random number takes the prize. If you have 20 bp's you would get 21 shots at getting the lowest random number.

Slim chances as NR. Bonus point do give you another chance to draw a low number. The lowest number draws the tag if enough tags for bonus point. Random tag only, not sure it helps much.

I'm 56 and have not drawn a OIL time tag and a resident. You never know. Drew a MT sheep tag, which is rare. Son drew AZ lope tag which is rare, Brother drew Monroe early elk tag with one point.

Good luck

They still matter, just not as much as they used to.

So many hunts now days have no tag for the max point holders so the pool is draining slower than we're aging.

I have 21 NR elk points but I don't know if I can last the 30 years it's going to take to get rid of the 125 higher point holders ahead of me for the top tags at the rate it's going.

Utah is a broken system on bonus points for those NRs that want to jump in now. You may never draw a LE elk hunt or deer hunt or OIL.

Residents are going down the same road losing opportunity to hunt in Their own state, and why you find them imore and more in the surrounding states with more opportunity...

>Residents are going down the same
>road losing opportunity to hunt
>in Their own state, and
>why you find them imore

>states with more opportunity...

It doesn't take a genius to understand why other states have more opportunities. More animals, more sustainable habitat, higher demand from its citizens, they don't have private organizations stealing public tags from the draw and auctioning them off to the highest bidder every February... Utah does as good as they possibly can with what they have to work with right now. Is the system perfect? Absolutely not. Are there worse systems out there? You bet.

I'm not trying to argue, just pointing out the obvious. I think UDWR does a great job trying to appease the crazy amounts of special interest groups in Utah. The public wants quality, there ya have it...

Arns,

Are you trying to make a point to me that Colorado doesn't have elk opportunity or that it is tough to get a decent tag?

That it is tough to draw NR tag in unit 2,10, and 201. I know guys that have 23 points and are chasing the point creep.

This way, it entices people to start buying points now (mindset of I have chance).

Otherwise, how could they convince anyone to start now?

I'm not sure i?d chase 23 points For a bull hunt in Colorado. I'm glad we all have different mindsets. Those few units are tough to draw, but there are hundreds of elk options with way less points (even over the counter) for a great bull in Colorado.

I need some help understanding the Utah draw because I can't find it on their site and I thought I read that they changed the way the draw works.

#1 It seems like you still have a chance to draw a good unit with very few points but people with many points have more chances in the hat... Is this correct?

#2 How does the 1st choice, 2nd choice etc work for draw order. Does a first choice always trump someone's second choice or is this like New Mexico where if I get drawn high in the draw and my first choice is taken, I get my second choice or 3rd choice if it hasn't been taken?

prizes14:

your #1 question: this was answered above, but....yes.

your #2 question: everyone's first choice is considered before anyone's second choice

2nd choice only comes into play if the hunt goes unsubscribed, which never happens anymore....

1: They give half the tags out as a random draw, and half the tags to the people with the most bonus points. So if there is 20 tags, 10 would go to the high points holder only and half would go to everybody including any high points holders that was not selected in the bonus points pool.

That said, just because you have 10 points does not mean you have 10 chances in the hat, it means you get 10 randomly selected numbers in a pool of numbers with every other applicant that put in for that species, you only get to keep your lowest number the rest are thrown out.

Now lets say you get lucky and draw the #1 that would mean you would have drawn any tag you put in for as there is no chance of anyone else having a lower number than you.

Now lets say you draw #5000, you could still get drawn for the tag you want as long as no one with a lower number put in for that hunt as well.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

So you are saying they draw for numbers first, before they hold any drawing, then those numbers you draw are used in multiple drawings, first deer, then elk, then etc....?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-05-19 AT 04:07AM (MST)[p]If you have 20 points in Colorado as a nonresident you will never draw a top tier elk tag. It is mathematically impossible to draw a 2,10, or 201 tag. Every system has their pros and cons. At least in a Utah system you have a swingers chance.

That is only 3 units in Colorado. In Utah, while not a 0% chance, it is 99%+ likely that you will never draw a top tier tag. I have been trying for 20 years to draw a medium tier tag and no luck yet. Meanwhile, I hunt Colorado every year with a limited license. If they suddenly switched Colorado to a Utah system, there would be such an outcry!

Glad I got to hunt unit 2 once.

I guess this doesn't factor in the people that age out and therefore they never get a tag or chose to finally use the points on a tag they can draw. But overall agree.

I do like that CO rewards those first with highest points. Doesn't seem right that someone with 0 points can draw a tag that others have been trying to draw for over 25 years. But at least in UT you always have a chance, however small.
