Me & my cousin go Whitetail hunting almost every year to Idaho. We have decided to not go there this year due to the increase in there hunting license cost(which is bullsh_t). So we are looking for another state. Any good idea's would be helpful. Where considering Montana? or South Dakota? but are open to any good advice. We're from Utah, but we love hunting the Whitties!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-09 AT 10:33PM (MST)[p]They killed some monsters in SD this last year. Nice thing about SD is you can hunt pheasants too during the same season. If I can help ya in that state let me know.

Thanks Gator, SD is where we have been talking about going. Plus I raise hunting dogs and run NSTRA field trials, so that would be a great idea. Which week would you plan for that would be good for both hunts?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-09 AT 07:30PM (MST)[p]The rut is around the 2nd week of Nov BUT some years it starts around Thanksgiving,Anytime in Nov that would be the time to head back, Last year the rut was around the 1st week of Nov on the eastern side we was jumping WT buck left and right with Does in heat while we was pheasant hunting. We saw some really good ones.Got alot of birds too,

Check out the HUGE buck Mark Kayser shot in the Photo Gallery forum.

north eastern Washington, we have taken 2 over 170 1 over 190 and a handfull over 150

Is Eastern Washington a draw hunt? I've never thought of hunting there, because in Idaho we see so many Washington hunters.

No draw in Washington for whitetails, alot of washington guys hunt there cause its close and you can hunt close to 4 months in ID for deer with the seasons. WA is a choose your weapon state, can only hunt the season with what your tag says, so some are very short.

Milk river is about the most overrated area, its what media has done, lots of nice bucks, but rarely do they ever excede 160, 130-150 is the norm, not to include its so private and leased up.

160 is nice and I wouldnt pass, what I am saying they have very few B&C deer, its just not there, there are lots of nice bucks, if you want to hunt MT, hunt north western MT, some giants in that country.I just like to hunt areas that can produce 180 or better bucks

I've hunted the Milk River a couple of times, Great hunting forsure!

Black Hills is always a fun hunt, there be bigguns in there, too. Wyoming side has been very good to our camps when a Muley hunt didn't fit the program. Wiley Whitey is alive and well on those big ridges.
