Hi all. I am originally from VA but my parents brought me to NM a long time ago and I lived here ever since. But I have half my family over in VA and haven't seen them in a while. Well I wanted to visit them this year and since I took up bowhunting this year I would like to visit them and do a whitetail hunt if possible. I'm not looking for someones spot or to shoot a huge deer (unless one presents) but just to hunt, maybe make new friends and learn how to hunt those little buggers, fill the freezer and all. If anyone thinks they could help out please let me know so I can save and plan. Thanks everyone.

VA is loaded with whitetails in most places now. The only exception would be public land in the mountains (western VA) when densities are in general significantly lower, but private land in most of the state is loaded. Where exactly is your family located?

John,
I got family all over the place there. Richmond, Lynchburg, Norfolk area. I was born in Richmond. So I should probably try to find some private land to hunt huh? I guess I really didnt think about that being that there is so much national forest over here. Is it going to be a hard time to find someone to let you hunt out there? If you have some more info. you can pm me or if you have any ideas, maybe places to try on public land? Thank you for the help.

Ryan,
Almost without exception hunting on private land in Va is tied up by the landowners themselves and their close friends or is leased by clubs. If you were back there and had some time you could try to find a reasonably priced club to join near where you have family, but a better way to go for this year might be to focus on one of the Wildlife Management Areas managed by the VDGIF. I've never hunted it but I think i've heard that the Amelia WMA just west of Richmond can be good for both deer and turkey, especially during bow season. It's about 2,200 acres - not big by western standards but that is a lot of land in the Virginia jungle. Make sure you spray for ticks in the early season. The link below shows all the WMAs in Va and gives some info on each. Good luck
