The year of 2007. I was living with my parents and student teaching at the local elementary school. This made for a great hunting season. I was able to go out everyday that hunting season, From Sept . 5 or 6th until the last weekend in Nov. Even the week break in between bow hunting and rifle hunting I spent scouting. It was just a perfect season. It was halloween and I had to dress up for my students. I had on a Bright green shirt with frankenstein printed on the front... it looked ridiculous! I had contemplated going out this evening since it was halloween and all, but finally figured I would just take a quick ride and throw in my 12 gauge with slugs. This was my duck hunting gun, it had never shot a slug through it. I made up my mind early that I wasn't going to shoot a buck... I had a doe tag and wanted to try and get a doe with it.
I drove around, searching the fields for a probable stalk with no such luck. Finally I figured I could go park and take a little walk along the edge of some Quakies. It was only about 30 minutes until shooting light was over, so I was kind of rushing. After about 300 yards I caught movement out in the field in front of me. I quickly got behind a giant clump of golden grass. The deer was about 600 yards out there and moving my way. I decided to sit tight. As he got closer, I realized, "this is a pretty decent buck", All previous notions of not shooting a buck went out the window, and this buck was going down!
At 150 yards I realized, this buck is on a scrape line. With that thought I looked over to my right, sure enough there is a scrape 5 feet from me! It was just perfect, now if I could keep my cool. 100 yards... okay just wait.... 90 yards... keep your cool.... (starting to get nervous)...80 yards.... "Come on! calm yourself! you only have an open site shotgun! what are you doing! should've brought your rifle!" .................60 yards! "Can't take it!" I put the beed on the facing bucks' chest and let one fly! Whop! it sounded like I just threw a rock off a drum. The buck didn't go down, instead it ran straight at me... at 10 yards it bailed off to my right, I followed with the barrel and two more shots. The third shot hit solid and rolled him over only 25 yards from me. Man I was jacked! I was pleasantly surprised to lift him up and see the dropper with another point protruding from it!
Sorry for the crappy photo... wasn't expecting greatness... just a doe for meat... cell phone had to do..
