Ok guys I have a whitetail hunt set up for the first week in November in Nebraska we have about 3 miles of river bottom to hunt ,we will not be able to scout at all. one person in the group hunted this place last year.Just a couple of general question about that time of year I am assuming the rut will not have started? What type if any calling works at this time? scents what should i use doe, buck ? decoys ? rattling? any information would help a ton I just want to have my bases covered I have been waiting a long time for this . We will be hunting along the republican river THANKS for any help

2 and 3rd weeks are the best for rutting.
But you will have Bucks checking scrapes and such, Find a line of scrapes and hunt them.
I would also hang a treestand along a good used trail that was following that scape line by the river and wait for cruising bucks.

As Gator lead to it is a bit early for the rut but they are fairly predictable at this point. Bucks are taking interest in does but the does still aren't ready. Find a travel corridor between food and bedding with a bottle neck and set up your stand near this area down or cross wind. Big bucks use cover and usually will travel down wind paralling the main trail. If you know the area you will be hunting google earth can be a huge asset to use and predict where the main trails and transistion areas will be in relation to feed and bedding. Bucks will be working these areas starting their routine of searching of a hot doe. I wouldn't use any deer scents or sounds since they are not 100% focused on does yet. Don't give your position away. If a scent is to be used I'd look for something locally found in your hunt area as a cover scent, i.e. cattle crap, raccoon piss, dirt, specific trees/brush/shrubs etc. When looking at rubs and scrapes look for an over hanging limb which is about 6 feet up and rub which has rubbings about chest high or higher. The higher the rub and the higher the overhanging scrape scent limb typically the bigger the buck. Sounds like you have a great hunt planned. Good Luck ! ! !

Good advice given, utilize it. Hunting whitetails is almost as fun as hunting mulies. Good luck and take lots of pics to show us after your hunt.

I have hunted NE alot around Cherry CO. on a freinds ranch and if your hunting close to the rifle season and you have a good population of doe's your going to be in for a wild ride there will be bucks going crazy all over. When you said you were going to be on a river bottom I would ask what the tree's are like because my friend owns almost 10 miles of live river bottom and I don't think you could get a tree stand in maybe 20 trees there all pretty small.

Good luck!

I live on the Republican and can tell you the bucks will be cruising and some will be starting to chase, you will have numerous trees to choose from for hanging a tree stand. I wouldn't do much rattling if it were me, I have friends that have luck with decoys and it seems they have the best luck with buck decoys. The scent thing i think is up to you. I usually sit throughout the day during this time of year, you can't kill one in camp! Where at on the Republican?

We have used 2 or more decoys setup(cow elk) together and it really seems to calm them a bit should work the same for WT.

Treestands get up about 12-16 ft high will be best.
Some of those willow patches will hold bedded does and have scrape line into them.

Code blue with a dripper will work good at that time of year.

Whiteys are much harder to hunt than those dumb ole muleys.
Be on your A-game. Hunt hard, dont miss.
They're tastier too.

George Petersen's place? If so you will have a good time. He practices Quality deer managment, and has some nice bucks. I live back here and know him personaly, but have never hunted there. Good Luck.
