Colorado Eastern Plains Deer Hunt

Does anyone have any info they would be willing to share on a ranch to hunt in eastern CO for a trespass fee. I would prefer not to go guided, mainly due to the cost, but wouldn't completely count it out. I currently have 7 NR points for deer.

Thanks,
Jody

Let's consider! Eastern Colorado has been in the deep throws of severe drought for a decade. Ranchers have been selling off their stock at bottom barrel, just too survive. "I would prefer not to be guided". You out of state idiots have no idea what is going on financially/environmentally; but your worried about "cost"!!! Stay
home, drynuts, save your financial face!!!!!

Brooks264,
No, I'm not an expert on the economics of eastern Colorado, but didn't expect such a harsh reply. With all the nice people I've met when I've been to Colorado it's hard to believe that you're a native born resident. Sorry if I hurt your feelings by asking and good luck next fall.

Pull your head out of your ass, dont reply if you cant help with a little info.

Wow, first off I'd like to apologize for the rude comments made earlier. Yes, Colorado had been hit VERY, VERY, VERY hard by the recent drought. Ranchers have been selling off their stock at extreme discounts and some of the smaller ones have been unable to pay off property taxes and therefore are having to sell the ranch. The scene has been changing annually out here both in who owns the land, and where the animals are going. Since crops haven't been doing well at all, the animals are going to very different behavioral routes.

Second, there are some great opportunities to hunt white tails out here, if you do the legwork. The units along the major rivers are always good producers, year after year. There are also some good SWA's along some of the major rivers that hold good whitey's. That being said, any unit with SWA access is a high point unit. Some of the best areas for white tail are out in the plains. The unit I hunt doesn't have a single running creek within 45 miles of any of the boundaries, but we kill 150+ bucks every year.

I know this is the long winded way of saying. get out and do the legwork, but some awesome opportunities can be found here. If I was you i'd save points, head to one of the higher preference point units and knock on doors while your out there to find a rancher that'll let you whack a whitey in a 0 preference point unit.

JB,
Thanks for the info, I did not realize that the droughts were that bad, I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully 2014 will be a year of positive change and some beneficial weather for the area.

I've typically hunted the west side of the state, but have heard good things about the plains and have just been considering different options.

Here in Maine we've had a very cold winter and have been pounded by snow, as of this morning we're 31 inches above normal. I'm hoping for an early spring, or we're going to start losing a lot of deer around here.

Thanks again, and good luck this fall.

5 post and you put the most disrespectful post Ive ever seen for a man wanting a little info? What good could possibly come from your post?

I know it is difficult at best being from Maine but if you come out to hunt western Colorado, I recommend knocking on some doors. Plan to come out a couple days early or stay late and spend some time in Eastern CO.
More and more landowners are not willing to let you hunt but there are still some. Check out a couple units you think you want to draw after finding some land for the following year, apply and bingo, got some private land to hunt...
Good luck

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?
