Heading out for a Kansas muzzleloader whitetail hunt next week. Anyone else hunting this early Sept. 11-24 season? Units 1 and 2 around Goodland, and then on down to Texas to see if there is anything we can help out on around the friends house.

Good luck! I'm trying to figure out whether or not I'm going to make it up there for the early hunt or not.

Good luck Blank. Be sure to post pics!

Question, did you need preference points to draw the tag? Kansas is on my list for serious consideration next year.

No, I had 0 points and got the WT tag. Was hoping to also get the mule deer upgrade but that is a separate lottery after you draw the WT and is about 6:1 odds.

Just a quick update on hunting in NW Kansas in Sept. It is hot hot hot!!! Been in the low and mid 90's all week, today actually hit 100 at mid-afternoon! Deer movement pretty much all night and only first and last hour of the day. Still seeing a lot of both WT and MD, and a couple shooters spotted. Anyone wanting to shoot the extra doe wouldn't have any problem. Have had close encounters with a skunk, couple bobcats, and 4 raccoons. :). Thunderstorm tonight cooled it down a little. Wish me luck.

Sounds like you're having a good time, well except for the heat, the skunks, and the bugs! But hey, a bad day hunting is better than a good day at work!

Good luck Blank. Looking forward to the full story, along with kool pics!

Hope you find a good one.

Tried a couple new spots, with varied success. The one place has many more mulies and a couple nice bucks. I would shoot them anywhere. Unfortunately, I do not have the MD tag...The other spot has tons of WT does, but only smaller bucks (4's and 6's). Have not seen a shooter buck there yet, but have about three more days to hunt, before leaving for Texas. They are starting to cut some of the corn, so that will help a little. Temps are creeping back up into the 90's so that isn't helping. I will be able to come back for the Dec firearms season if unlucky.

Finished up today with an awesome assortment of animals seen. Hunted morning and evening for 10 days, saw lots of both WT and MD, and about 10 bucks. There were shooters there before the season and today they even ran across the road!!! Didn't pull the trigger but I will be back for the Dec hunt.
Will post some more pics on my HAC report when I get the laptop charged up

Couple pics to add in here. Did see some nice bucks at the end of my hunt, and will be looking for them when I go back, since the corn will be harvested. You can see how dark it is in this cornfield, when 16 WT does came pouring out of the standing stalks. Was the only day I did not have my good camera, and had to make do with the cell phone. Saw lots of mule deer bucks and will try to get an upgrade permit next year. Not unusual to see a couple hundred turkeys every day either.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-17 AT 07:29PM (MST)[p]Hey Blank, did we talk on the phone about whitetail hunting in Iowa? Maybe about a month ago?

Kool pics. Are those Rios?

With Snow on the ground in DEC that would be a great hunt.

Leaving in the morning for the Kansas Firearms season, that opens Nov. 29th. Have a week to find one of those big bucks that were hiding in the corn in September during the muzzy hunt. I will update as I can on how things are going.

Good luck Blank. I am leaving for Kansas on Monday. I hunt northeast Kansas. hoping for a bog one also. Hunted there last year and shot a 147.

Good luck ACM, hope you find a monster. A 147 is a really nice mature buck. I'm hoping for better, but would certainly be happy with it.

Just rolled into the motel in Goodland. 780 miles in 11 1/2 hours is a long haul, but without the extra potty stops for the wife this time it sped up quite a bit.

Scouting the old areas from Sept and checking out a couple new ones. Have permission on some private later in the season. Still holding out for a good one or not at all. Wife is good with that so that helps!!!

I'll try to update as I can, with some pics

I am doing this ?old school?. DIY on public WMA, checking other walk in areas, and a swell rancher I met in Sept is good with me hunting his place, after son-in-law gets a shot at it first. I can certainly appreciate letting family first, but to let me on at all is awesome! Two days to re-scout and make a plan.

Good luck, Blank. I loved bowhunting KS when I went a few years ago. Going back next year for sure.

Global warming that sucks
It was in the 60's in South Dakota when I was there and I thought that was bad.
Good luck on your hunt

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-17 AT 09:13PM (MST)[p]Just a follow up report on the last trip. Great time, weather was up and down again, saw lots of WT, MD. and turkeys. Had no intention of shooting a doe and using the antlerless tag but could have done that every day. Passed on a lot of 2, 4, and small 6 point bucks. Again, not what I had planned and if they weren't substantially bigger than the ID and WY bucks, they got a free pass. Saw some big ones, and missed a couple of them. Darn short range muzzlelaoders anyway!!!! Will update my HAC with a long report and pictures.

All in all, I can't wait to go back. :)
