Hey, Monster Muleys!

Locke Wheeler wrote an interesting article on when to call for whitetail bucks (primarily in Louisiana) on our website. Check it out here.

What do you look for before starting to call? Do you blind call or call only when you see a buck?

Best,
Tim

Generally I only rattle or use a grunt call once or twice in a 3 or 4 hour sit. That's when I haven't seen any deer for a few hours. If I can see a buck I'll only call if I don't think he'll come past me and give me a shot. The problem with calling is that deer comes in looking for another deer and if he doesn't see one most of the time he leaves, usually before getting in (bow or crossbow) range. If he does come in(and here's the biggest problem) he's on high alert and it's almost impossible to move in a tree stand without being seen. Most of the time they'll spot you without you moving.

I just started rattling 4 years ago and I've had 1 big 10 point(164 inch) throw caution to the wind and come charging in. Most come in like I said above or circle to get down wind.

When it works it's pretty exciting but most of the time I think it's better to be quiet.
