Area 2 Bull

I sent this to Trophy Hunter with my story but asked about posting the pic and got the ok. By some unbelievable stroke of luck I drew the hybrid tag. This was my Colorado Area 2 early season either sex rifle hunt. Which by the way is crazy to me. Who in their right mind would shoot a cow with that tag. Tons of mass and some cool devil points, though it is hard to see from the pic. The hidden one on the opposite side is almost 5". Still had some velvet which gave it some character. Not that giant elk need any more "character", but it is kinda cool. (I have never shot anything even close to his size, so everything about this elk to me is cool.)
He ended up scoring 388 5/8's gross.
A once in a lifetime bull for sure. Even better that I was able to share it with my dad (in back)and uncle (taking the pic.

Really nice bull! Sounds like a great hunt. How points did it require for the hybrid tag? I got five this year so I would able to enter. Enjoy your trophy of a lifetime.

All you have to do is put in first choice for the hybrid areas and you are entered. I think 5 is the minimum. I had more than 5, but not anywhere near the 19 or so it usually takes. They obviously take all your points if you draw.

Nice bull. Interesting to see velvet on the antlers. I shot my Unit 2 bull on 03SEP and he still had some velvet on him. I had thought by then it would have all been off. Obviously they keep i on longer since your bull had to have been shot in OCT.

Yep. Just got it in before the Dec 31st deadline.

I was wondering the same thing. I thought it was really late for velvet too, but figured it was either environmental issues this year, or that the bulls in that area hold velvet that much longer. I took mine almost a month to the day later than yours, so that is interesting. Temperatures during the Oct hunt were pretty warm. I can't imagine archery was any better.

Before one of the many forum morons say it..... that's an "ok" bull for unit 2. Lol, whatever! That's a MONSTER !!!!!! Congrats!!!!!!

>Great bull. May be a dumb

Check out CDOW website for more detail but basically for all areas that are over a 10 pref point draw they started giving out a small percentage of tags in a true lottery system to anyone who has more than 5 pts and selects first choice on those areas. As I understand it, no preferences, everyone just gets thrown in a hat, so to speak. I think the percentage is so small that non-residents can't draw, but I'm not 100% sure on that. So basically, you have a "punchers" chance to pick up one of those tags if you have more than 5pts and you want to take your chances with a first choice draw. I did it because for the most part we hunt cows or OTC areas and I could always draw as second choice. Never thought I would get pull this tag.

In the high quality units nonresidents do not have a chance at the hybrid (random luck draw). I believe that for residents there is only 1 tags in each of the top units due to the percentages. Nonresidents do not get enough tags to pull out a full tag for the hybrid.

While it is nice to know you have a chance, all it really does it increase points creep. 1 less tag for top holder and more people put in hoping they are lucky... I really do not like it, but am glad you put it to good use.

I actually wasn't a fan when they first came out, and I totally understand where guys are coming from that have 18pts and didn't draw last year. What is hard to argue though is that it creates more interest in those areas. Instead of hunters just giving up on the premium areas because of the creep, they have a small hope. It's like powerball, except someone actually does have to win every time. I thought I read somewhere 10% of the tags, so if in area 2 there were like 20 something rifle tags, then it was 2 or if they rounded up 3 hybrid tags? Not sure exactly. I really hope I wasn't the only one who drew that tag.

That is an Awesome bull! Congrats!

Great Bull!! Congrats. I think i'm becoming closer to drawing a tag for a unit like 2 hopefully soon. All i can say is WOW!!!

Yeah I think it was 2 in the hybrid. I do know that the number of people applying in 2, 201 and 10 spiked when they set up the season. Now some of those could have been like me who have always just PP as first choice knowing I had no chance, but I know people right now just building points to get to 5 and start going for the hybrid tags. When Colorado offer OTC elk for most of the state, there is really nothing to keep a person from applying every year now that they have a chance... This will eventually lead to PP creep or a lot of guys dieing with their points.

Also it does add to point creep as now the top guys are in the mix for fewer tags. Just like taking an additional % of tags to landowners, etc. So while it is nice to have a shot, I do know people right now that had 3-4 points for elk. They have all decided to start applying for 1st choice 2, 201 10 tags and then go OTC. How long they will stick with it? Not sure but many are in that tag pool now that would have never tried before.

That's a heck of a nice Bull, please post up the pictures of him mounted when you get him done.
Hope to read your story in the magazine.

20% of the tags go to the hybrid draw. There are 5 tags for unit 2. I drew the hybrid tag last year and camped next to two other guys that had drawn on the hybrid as well. Just curious how many points did you draw with? I drew with 9 and everyone else I know that has drawn has had less than 10 points including the two guys I met down there who each had 6.

That is a great bull what part of the unit were you hunting?

That is a monster bull! Congrats on using the system and pulling out a great bull! If I had elk points, I would go for the hybrid tag as well! Why not! You did everything right.

With that said, I am completely against the hybrid lottery tag system as well. I think it's a joke to give anyone a tag for a trophy unit that hasn't waited their turn. Some jack*** in the DOW didn't want to wait to accumulate their own PP's, and created this joke of a draw. You had mentioned it gives these units more interest. Does it look like these units need more interest??? Just saying. I was really upset when I read this new terrible idea a while back. Like Elks96 said, now everyone who has waited their turn, and accumulated an ungodly amount of points, gets hit with point creep when they should be going on their hunt!!!!! How can we get this abolished???

DesertGhillie you said "How can we get this abolished???" why don't you ask how can we get rid of point creep instead. fixing a broken arm with a bandaid doesn't do crap.

If they made it to where anyone for any reason got a tag they would use their points, point creep would be NON-EXISTENT!
I have 7 or 8 points for elk in CO, I would love for them to go this route. Doesn't matter if you use your 1st choice, 4th choice or bought a OTC tag, tag in pocket equals points reset to zero.

Why are you guys pissin and moanin on this thread. Numb nuts like you are the reason people don't like to show off their trophys. Anyway, great bull!

I would like the idea of point banking for 3-5 years, combined with previous idea if you hunt on any tag you lose your points. Including if you buy a landowner tag.

Woods- I drew with 8 points.
We looked at the entire unit at some points. From the edge of Dinosaur and Douglas Mt. all the way up to Lookout Mt. and Powderwash. Ended up staying mostly around Bears Ears and Two Bar Spring.

Hey congrats again. I did not mean to hi jack the thread at all earlier just feel I should share my thoughts/feeling about the new set up. The best part is you got to share with your dad. Unfortunately due to PP creep I am not certain I will have the same chance.

Also I wanted to point out that bulls in any of the NW trophy units have a hard time scrapping off all of the velvet. Just a lack of suitable trees arond. I found a large bull several years ago that had rubbed off 2+ inches of his eyegaurds in the dirt because there was a lack of taller trees in thee area... Just a little ways north of where you were hunting... I think he was mainly scrapping sage. Also interesting to note how the antlers are typically so light in color from constant sun, lack of pine and light colored soils...

No problem hijacking the thread. I really do totally understand and agree with you. I don't want it to seem like I am "cheer leading" this tag. I just saw a opportunity and had the points to put in for it. Figured I would put my quarter in and take a pull on the slot. I still can't believe I drew it.

I have always wondered about the light coloration on those NW bulls. I have taken some in Area 3 over the years and they all had that real light coloration. I've always wondered about the bulls I've seen in 2 and if it was because of the lack of pine and so much sage. They are definitely not as pretty as their mountain brethren, but very distinct none the less.

Again, no worries about your thoughts on the draw. There has got to be a better way than waiting for 19+ years to draw a tag. I felt a bit of of guilt after finding out about the tag, and for sure after taking that bull. I know someone had to draw the hybrid, but it does take away a little from the excitement when I know that there were guys waiting for almost two decades to hunt that area.

You shouldn't feel guilty. Great bull and good job. Always nice to enjoy hunts with family members. I hope you have big ceilings in your home.

I have giant ceilings, and the perfect place to put it. Unfortunately this elk, along with my other "dead things" are regulated to the garage (also tall ceilings) per the wife. Just got the antlers mounted. No use spending the money for the head if it won't be displayed prominently in a position of grandeur with up-lighting and the "Halleluiah Chorus" playing when someone walks in the room. Women just don't understand.

With around 40 people in each point bracket the creep is going to happen regardless. The hybrid system just gives people that would normally never be able to draw in their lifetime a chance. Eventually these units will end up with more of a bonus point system to allow people a chance to draw. Without it the points required to draw the tag with continue to rise from year to year. My uncle is in this situation and has been 1 or 2 points behind for the past 8 years and now has 19 points and is still a year or two from drawing the tag. This hybrid system only takes 20% of the tags and gives a chance to people that would otherwise never have a prayer.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-13 AT 06:59PM (MST)[p]Short story on the bull. I shot him on the Walker Ranch and did not recover the bull right away. He was later found by another hunter. I am thinking he whitened up sitting in the sun. That being said when I shot him I did notice that his antlers were very light in color.

Pretty cool story! I guess the bulls in Unit 2 don't have much shade anyway, so hence the white antlers, as people said above. But the extra month in the sun probably added to it as well. Glad you got the bull! Did you have to ask the DOW if you could tag it after it was found?

I am pretty certain that the shade is not the issue. As mentioned above it is more a function of the dirt type (all of NW Colorado is dry arid lighter colored soil, and a lack of pine trees/tar to stick the dirt).

Some areas all the elk have to rub on are sage. While the sun does have an effect, the antlers never get dark because there is nothing to make them dark in the first place...

Sure does look like those 2 bulls had the same genetics for sure.
Both are great looking bulls.
