unit 70, 4th rifle deer

My dad and I were fortunate enough to each draw unit 70, 4th rifle for deer.

We've been followers of the forums for some time, but now looking for any and all suggestions as we prepare for our hunt. My dad is 60 and been on many western hunts, but he'd prefer to not beat himself up too badly at this stage. We're not afraid to work and get off the beaten path, but we'd sure appreciate any ideas to help put us in the best position to get on some trophy deer, say 180 or better if possible. Ideally we'd set up a base camp to hunt from, but not sure what's realistic. We will be able to get there 3 or 4 days early to scout prior to hunting, but that's it. Thoughts on location to start scouting, conditions to expect, do's and don'ts, etc.?

We sincerely appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in posting. It was a successful hunt. I was fortunate enough to take a 4x4 with some character on the last morning. My dad wasn't as lucky, but he saw a good buck the last evening. It was tough hunting, not a lot of good bucks to be had and the warmer weather leading up to our season didn't help I'm sure. I hope the picture below works for you all.

Congrats Hank, My son and I also had 70 4th season tags and
to say the least we struggled. We hunted our butts off but when the bucks were not where they were suppose to be this time of year combined with our inexperience we just could not find mature deer.
We arrived almost two days before the opener and that was the only time we seen the town of Naturita where we stayed in daylight.Passed a solid buck first morning and then a real nice 160 buck the first night. Second day never seen a buck bigger than a fork until a hour before dark when I killed a 150 buck. Plan was to concentrate on my sons tag and to find a keeper.
Days 3 and 4 were real downers as not only were we seeing less bucks but tiny ones. We tried different areas but with only a few days left tried to go back and sit on pockets of does we found at least once a day.
Last morning decided to drive and glass in new areas and we did see deer and had a chance at a 150 to 160 buck but could not make it happen. With a 23 hour drive staring us in the face and our frustration we did not stay for the evening hunt.
Had a great time, seen a ton of deer, and to spend 8 days with my son whom I do not get to see often made it all worth while. Just wish he had been the one to shoot the deer. Tried to convince him to shoot a smaller buck as we do not get out west often but he was not having it.

Dang, pjs78, sorry it didn't end the way you hoped. We scouted 4.5 days and only saw one other decent buck during that time. In the 5 days we hunted deer were pretty scarce, much like you described. We hunted a few spots near Pony Draw and up on Monogram Mesa where I shot my buck. Sounds like we all had a challenge, but a great experience with or without the trophy. Best of luck to you and your son going forward. I took my 4 year old son and 5 year old daughter with me tonight for the final hours of the WI gun deer season and I harvested a doe with them sitting at my side. I'm looking forward to getting them after mule deer when they're older. It's amazing to continue the tradition.

That's a really nice buck, and for the conditions this season, you did great! I'm sure its tough not filling the other tag especially since it took a lot of points, but if my dad shoots a buck and I don't, or vice versa, it feels good when you know one good buck is going back home with your family. Congrats.

Thanks, newguy/Mark! I haven't been on TV that I know of. Then again I don't get to watch Cops every week. ;) But seriously, no TV crew for this guy.

I remember a show a few years back with a guy that would go on hunts with his dad, can't remember the name of it, but you reminded me of him, so much for a virtual conversation with a celebrity, congrats again on a great buck.

Mark
