Went brook trout fishing this morning on the flat tops and it was 32 degrees. A pretty heavy frost. There were low misty areas and low hanging clouds. What a beautiful morning and the fish were biting like crazy. They are in their fall spawning colors and are jus beautiful little rascals. Muzzle loader chaos is just around the corner....can't wait! Saw a few does noting else.

Were you at Forest lake or another for the brookies my Grandpa and I used to fish Forest in the sixties and we caught some great brookies there. Used to hike in the mile and fished on the north side in Grandpa's favorite spot. Loved that Flat Top Mountain Grand Mesa

I was on the Buford side of the flat tops. I found a stream that is about 2' wide and 18" deep with some deeper pools 6-7 years ago. I go back a couple of times a year or whenever I need my wild side recharged. It is a 45-50 minute hike but it is worth it. Shot my MLs today..right where I left them last year. Going for deer in Craig area (they had a bad winter kill this past winter according to the rancher that I lease from) then to Kansas for white tail then 1st rifle for elk. My son and I both shoot 338s for elk. He shot his at 410 yards and mine was 290 last year going to be on a new ranch this year as the one we really like got sold. I am a little nervous!

I think the brookies are the best for eating I love them. a few years ago we were hunting in the White Mountains for elk and we came upon a stream that had so may brook trout in it, it was unbelievable. We went and got our fishing rods and a few worms and caught a mess of them.
We cooked them like a pancake in a frying pan and ate everything including the bones. They were out of this world.
Love those small streams my kid and I have talked of going back there someday and not for the elk hunting but for the fishing. By the way both worked out on that trip

By the way it looks like you hunt with you kid as well. My kid and I are going to Idaho this year for a guided hunt and a horseback trip back in 10 miles or so.
I shoot a .338 mag as well and can't wait to go this year, my son swears by his .300 mag and says it has a mind of it's own.
Love when the kids brag and then the old man goes out and bests them with one bigger.
How old are you and your kid? we are 60 and 39
