I'm looking at doing a DIY muley hunt eather next year or the year after that. I don't have any points and was trying to find out what units would be good muley population and to try to apply for that could have some good odds on drawing tags? I'm looking for foothills or plains in mid season or late with a rifle. Then in future years bow hunting. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

J1Bucks, saw someone already sent you a PM in a different post.

I hunt big game all over Colorado, on public land. I almost always hunt a different GMU area each year and experience no difference in hunting one GMU or season over another.

During hunting season there are hunters everywhere in this state, in every season, so just pick a place, make a plan and hunt there!

I have been trying to figure out how to help you, but honestly your question is so vague, its really hard. Do this.... Go to the Colorado Division of Wildlife, there is a ton of information! Read about the different areas the state has to offer, season success, etc. If you have trouble finding any of the info, PM and I will help you. Once you narrow it down a bit, come here and ask more detailed questions.... you will get better answers. PM me if you want some assistance, and I can try to explain CO the best I can.... but i typically avoid hunting 0 point units, which is something you will have to do next year.

Thank you guys. The other day I ordered a colorado parks and wildlife brochure I hope it will help out. When I get it and do some more research I might have more questions if I do I'll PM you cmbbulldog.

CO has a messed up (wrong) system, you will be able to apply for a better unit (multiple points required) to collect points and then draw a buck tag with your 2nd-4th choice. Make sure you use that if possible. I have a unit I can draw as a 2nd choice and a unit that takes 1-2 points to draw and I rotate back and forth. Can also wait longer if you so choose to do so.
This way you get to hunt every year.

When you do find a unit for deer or elk, stick with it. Don't jump units every year chasing internet stories of quality/quantity of animals. Another thing is to get out scouting it! Not just a leisurely ride on hwy through unit but learn it. Learn all access points into area you are interested in, not for you but where pressure will come from.
One unit we hunt I have a rock I sit where bucks come out every evening last 30 minutes of light from exact same spot. Very predictable and easy access, you don't learn those things from home surfing google earth.

The hunter brochure is helpful in a general sense, but mainly if you already know where you are wanting to go. Read it, but there are many resources online at the CPW website that will help you more. Examples:

http://cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/PlanYourHunt.aspx

http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Hunting/HunterEd/HuntPlanner.pdf

http://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/BigGameHuntGuides.aspx

http://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/Statistics.aspx

http://cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/Maps.aspx

Once you narrow your search, the statistics will tell you how many hunters, how many apply/get drawn, and success rates in each unit

Then the GMU maps are useful to begin your online scouting.
