Unit 201 cow hunt

I just picked up a cow tag for 1st rifle unit 201. I have never been there before. I am going to bring my 8 year old boy with me. I would like info on best map of the area for public/private/closed roads, closest town, best access for the area, decent place for my boy and I to tent camp, etc. Logistics type stuff.

Hoping it will be a fun hunt for my boy to tag along on, see some animals, and hopefully see one go down. Thanks for any info.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-16 AT 03:58PM (MST)[p]You'll have no problem filling the tag. Filling yer gas tank on the other hand, little tougher. Bring some cans of gas Maybell is about it. Camp on the backside of the tallest mtn in the north side of the unit and hunt it. They'll be going in circles on it till they head to Wyoming or private. You and yer boy will have a blast! A great tag to fill the freezer for sure. I have been to 201 several times over the years. One of my boys has a third season cow tag in 201 this year. Get the "Gates of Ladore" BLM map. The closest town and gas station is Maybell, CO. Maybell is over an hour drive from the unit, so you will want to bring extra gas cans if you plan on staying for an extended period of time. County road 10N to 72 will get you into the heart of the unit. I have seen elk from one end of that unit to the other. Cold Spring Mountain, Diamond Peak, Middle Mountain, Brown's Park SWA Wiggins unit, Big Joe Basin... Ive seen elk in all those places. There is an official campground with a vault toilet called Rocky Reservoir campground. It is near Atone Gap. We usually camp there. We have also camped on Cold Spring Mountain. You will have a great hunt and will see plenty of animals. It will just be a matter of connecting with one. Good Luck!

I appreciate the info guys. We will get there Friday sometime and get a little scouting in. Mom won't let him skip to many days of school haha. Should be a fun hunt regardless of the outcome. Thanks again for the help.
