Unit 63 3rd season

Well after seven years of saving points my group burned our points for third season unit 63. We covered a lot of ground and hunted hard. We hunted from 10,500 feet to 6000 feet. We did fill 2 of 3 tags but it was struggle. And did not see the caliber of bucks we expected to see. Very few deer "on public land" anyone who has hunted the unit understands what that means! Getting away from all the Elk hunters seem to help a lot but we were just baffled on how a few good books there were in the unit. There is a big-time outfitter in the unit that gives the unit a lot of trophy credibility, but from what some locals told me they fill their tags in the private hayfields. From what we figured out it seems that the unit stats are skewed because of all the hunting on private land. I have been told that when the unit get snow the public land does really good. Just wanted to give my thoughts about our hunt and wanted any thoughts from other hunters. I don't think we will be putting in for the unit again. I spent a lot of time studying the unit and had a lot of good Intel I'm happy to trade information with anyone who would like more specific details just DM me.

From what I'm reading, the general consensus is that of a bit of let down and frustration among the 2nd and 3rd season hunts. I hunted 2nd season in a close by unit. Felt the same way.

Had a similar experience in unit south of you. Lots of hunters, few bucks, little rutting activity, and unseasonably warm dry weather. I think it was a tough third season hunt in many CO units this year. We managed to fill one of two tags the last 20 minutes of the hunt, and were happy to accomplish that! Just not ideal hunting conditions this year. The biggest buck we saw would head into dark timber just before shooting light, and didn't come out until well after dark. I think some weather would have changed things up a bit, but enjoyed being out with a tag in my pocket.

Just got back from 63 3rd season 10 days. If I were you Im not I would put in for 63 unless you could guarantee yourself whether, which obviously can't. Your realistic goal of 160 inch buck is achievable. It's an easy fun hunt if you'd like to do a lot of driving and four wheeler riding. If you decide to put in for the tag I can give you a good detailed help. Only thing I ask is that you share the information you acquire with me after your hunt.
