Hi,
I serve as an elected delgate for sportsmen on the CPW sportsmans roundtable.
Back in the spring the CPW agreed to form a public access "working group" to examine all public access issues in Colorado - Public lands, Private lands, easements, leases, fishing access, small game access, big game access etc etc. The working group would have provided recommendations to the Parks and wildlife commission to improve public access for hunting and fishing. To date, no working group has been formed.
I have had multiple discussions with legislators about introducing and passing legislation to improve public access in Colorado via the creation of a "public access fund". I am hopeful a bill can be introduced this legislative session. As many of you know, I am a big fan of Montana's Block Management program as well as Wyoming' Access Yes program where the states lease lands for public access use.
Since the CPW access working group has never been formed, I'd like to bring together a group of sportsman who are passionate about public access to hunting and fishing to discuss current issues and potential solutions. There are many questions to address like should any funds derived from a bill include fishing, or be more specifically focused on hunter access. What about habitat stamp dollars? From 2009-14 the CPW web site says we acquired 142,000 acres of public access easements and I would guess we spent 10 million dollars to buy the access. Anyone know how to access these properties? Anyone ever hunted there?
If your interested in attending a few meetings on the topic and lodging your input, please get me your contact info and I will let you know the meeting schedule and locations. My email is [email protected]
