Anyone with good knowledge on deer hunting in units 2 and 201 that is willing to talk with me about what I could expect please PM me. I have enough points to draw a tag and I'm wanting info so I can get out of the deer pref points in Colorado.

Thanks

Much better deer units for quality. Herd numbers are low in both units and the quality of deer is not great. Those units are not really managed for tophy deer. they are trophy elk units. What a guy can expect, a solid chance at a 26" 4x4. CJ you get lucky? Yes, but when you look at the outfitters for those units, CJ Outfitters, or Diamond Peak outfitters. They take decent bucks but none of them are incredible.

Are there a few good buck? Yes, are they hard to find? Yes. If it were me a unit 2 or 201 hunt would have to be about the experience and the country and not about the quality. I know some local 1 point units have produced more deer over 200 in the last few years than what 2 or 201 have.

As mentioned it takes too many points.

I have no knowledge of the herd numbers or quality in those units, but I do know the quotas are very, very low and 2 is a large unit and unit 3 next door is one of the better deer units in the state. Those low quotas, to me, sound like trophy management.

Being manged for it and successfully managing for it are two different things. It's strugglin.

HAHA. Here you go again with your I get a land owner voucher every year and kill this and that crap.

Simply put if you look at the management plan for deer in those units, the objectives is not about harvesting big mule deer. The mule deer herds in the unit are crap the over all quality is poor and as a result anyone can easily see it is not a trophy unit. The management plan for the unit and the herd is not based on anything trophy. Feel free to talk with the wildlife managers in the unit. they are not managing unit 2, 201 or 10 for deer quality. Hell in some cases they are just simply trying to keep a few deer in the unit.

If it was about quality deer then the unit would be managed different, for example the elk herd would be greatly reduced.

Go ahead and look up the management objectives for those units. Then compare that to the objectives of units like 21, 44, etc.

Just because they have very limited licenses, does not mean it is a trophy unit.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-06-17 AT 09:59AM (MST)[p]Correct, they manage for numbers and not trophy quality. Minimal hunting pressure, good habitat and good genetics is a perfect recipe for a giant. I can tell you that you are not going to see deer numbers like you may have seen in unit 21 back in the early 2000's. I can tell you when you do see a buck it will more than likely have some gag factor.

I don't know why you have a hardon for me but it is getting pretty comical. I just proved my point on that case that you can kill a 80" goat in 201 with some hard work, " which I did", I just didn't have to work that hard.

I am trying to get my post numbers up so you can respect my comments, it just takes me longer as I am usually out in the hills and not on a Keyboard

Did you lose my email address? You can kill an 80 inch goat in alotta units in colorado. The point was, which still eludes you, is if you had the statewide antelope tag there are much better units than 2 and 201. Hey blackdog, did you fill that tag? Hope you didn't waste too much time down this rabbit hole.

Again, just like the antelope issue, there are many units which can produce big animals. Sorry but unit 2 and 201 simply are not great deer units. Hell look at 10 for example, 10 should have everything to grow great big huge bucks, but it does not do it consistently. Look at the outfitters and the bucks they kill in unit 2 and 201. You know the guys that are in the unit all the time and have hunters pay big money to be put on the best the unit has to offer. They kill decent buck, but I also know that the bucks they are showing are no different than the biggest bucks in near by units that only take a few points to draw.

Just like with the antelope, there are much better units that have much greater trophy potential. As far as time in the field, I spend plenty of time in the field. Also on that point, post count does not matter much either. Good facts allowing a person to make an honest judgement on hunt potential is what I aim for. I can tell you this, of the units that take 14 points to draw or more units 2 and 201 would be pretty low on my list if only considering animal quality.

Just like with antelope, there are much better units.

So let me ask you this, what motivation do you have for pimping units 2 and 201 as great trophy units for antelope? What about deer? Is it that you end up involved with the sale of vouchers for those units? Is it that guys giving an honesty opinion on the area actually devalues the voucher?

I don't sell vouchers in unit 2,201 so your going down the wrong road on that one. I just get tired of reading posts from guys that think they are king ##### because of how many posts they have on a forum and everybody should bow down.
Why do you care so much about the north west corner? How many tags have you had up there? All of your opinions you give people about these units, you must have hunted them at least 15 times by now?

All my opinions and comments are honest and from first hand experience. I try not to hide behind a keyboard, I just call it how I see it. Is the north west corner the mecca for all critters.... probably not, just where you go hunting it sounds like.
If you work hard, get off the road and give somewhat of and effort you will kill a slammer Speed goat, mule deer, jackrabbit ext.
If you want to tell me in more detail to my face what your opinion is I am out of Grand Junction, it's a long haul from the eastern slope so you might want to pack a lunch. Give me a call 623-3823

Hey buddy, I am willing to give you any info you need on unit 2, spent a lot of time up there. if you end up putting in and drawing , reach out to me and i will do what i can to help. May not be the norm, but i have seen some good bucks up there. but like everyone has said , not alot of deer.Always willing to help out a fellow hunter.
