Reminder that the 31st is the deadline to purchase your 2016 annual license. If you didn't have a big game, fishing, or small game license in 2016, then you will have to pay $40/species for every preference point. If you want points for both deer and elk this will cost $80.

If you buy a 2016 fishing license before the end of the month for $56 then it will save you $24 if you apply for points for two species or $64 if you apply for three.

FYI - it is explained in "Preference Point Fees" box in the lower right hand corner of page #2 in the application booklet.

I have 3 sons and building elk and deer points for each of us, so this little info saves me a 100 dollar bill every year if we don't draw a tag the previous year.

Be sure and hurry and use it before it expries on Friday! Funny what hoops they get us to jump through. But anything to save a buck!

Thanks for the heads up. So let me see if I have this correct. You purchase a 2016 fishing license which gives you a license in 2016 year so when you apply for 2017 the fee is waived for points? Do you need to apply before March 31st for this to be valid?
Thank you!

Yes - the $40 preference point fee per species is waived in the current year if you held a big game license (elk tag, deer tag, bear tag, etc)or an annual license (annual fishing license or annual small game license) from the prior year.

Fishing and small game licenses for 2016 can not be purchased after March 31st.

This is only a cost savings if you get preference points for 2 or more species. if you are only getting preference for one species than it is cheaper to just pay the $40 preference point fee.

If I remember, you don't get charged the fee as long as you held a big game permit in 2016. It's in the Colorado hunting guide under preference points like someone mentioned above. I think this was new either last year or the year before.

A friend of mine asked me today if he does not buy a point for 2017 will he loose his points that he accumulated so far? I think it use to be "Only one year allowed" so if he does not buy for two consecutive years he looses all his points. I just looked at the section concerning points and saw NOTHING CONCERNING WHEN YOU LOOSE POINTS IF YOU DON'T BUY ONE YEAR OR TWO.
Anyone have an answer on how you would loose if you did not buy even one year?

ColoradoOak is correct, it's ten years. I stopped applying for antelope points around 2010 and the system still shows I have 4 pref points.
