Unit 62 or 70 3rd Rifle Deer

Looking for a little advice for dad and I this fall. We have enough points (5) for 62 and about 90% chance for 70. We've hunted 62 once and have spent a bunch of time in 71/711. Just trying to get an idea of which unit to apply for. They seem similar in success rates and terrain and both are OTC elk units. Is one more crowded than the other? Is access better in 70 or 62? Which is better if you get snow? We're always hoping for a bomber buck but I'm sure we will both be happy with just filling our tags. Thanks for any help and good luck in the draw.

I was going to suggest 70 because of the extremely high pressure in 62. Then I looked @ last year's stats, including elk and deer total hunter/days for 3rd season. 70 had 9000 hunter/days in the 9-day 3rd season, 62 had 7000. 70 is a little larger in area, has more BLM. 62 has more NF. Those 2 are among the 3 busiest units in CO during 3rd, only 18 beats them by my fast glance.

In terms of elevation and weather: 62 is a giant plateau, flattish on top @ around 9500 el, w long mesas and steep canyons that slope down to the east through BLM to private ag land in the valley floor around 5000 feet. Lots of motorized access and atvs in 62. 70 has a little wilderness above timberline, then quickly descends from those high peaks to ag land north, and canyons/scrub/pinon/juniper to the west, about 6500 elev. 62 is much steeper. W a foot or more of snow up high, there would be much more terrain to hunt in 70, 7K elev and lower. Little or no snow and warmish, 62 would hunt better IMO.

Good luck choosing. Tick tock.

Good coming to you Elkduds!

That is one of the best "short" descriptions I've read on units. Exactly the info a guy needs and no b.s.

Great post ElkDud. That's the kind of info that's very helpful without giving spots away. A lot of us will ask about units not expecting a hunting spot but more about what to expect. I for one just don't always know the questions to ask

I hunted 3rd in 62 last season. Picked up a returned tag. Saw a lot of deer but few shooters. Ended up killing a small 4x4 on the 2nd weekend. Most were already down low on ag land. Watched a herd of 100+ right off 550 for a few days and they never left private. Lots of hunters too. I had a good hunt and learned more of the unit. Heading there this weekend for turkey opener.
